ADAMS, AWCS(AW) Mike Retired yardmarker08@gmail.com "...I entered into VP aviation as a Julie/ECM operator as an AX3 in 1964. My first squadron was VP-42, Crew-8, basically flying in the "maintenance officer's" crew (LCDR Ara Sarkisian and LCDR Marshall Martin). Leaving VP-42 with the disestablishment, I went to FAETUPAC NAS North Island, San Diego, California as a TACCO ASA-16 Instructor. FAETUPAC moved to NAS Moffett Field, California in 1969. In 1970 I was transferredred to VP-4 as an SS1. I flew until I had blood pressure problems which landed me in Schedules. I remained there until 1976, when I transferredred to CNAP Natops. After a two year tour there, I was fortunate to fly with the Canadian Forces (CF) (VP-415 and VP-405). With the decommissioning of the ARGUS, the AW billet went away and was replaced by an NFO billet in the AROURA airframe. In July 1980 I landed in ASWOC NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, ending up as the Senior Enlisted, Assistant Ops, Opcon, and Briefing/Debriefing Officer. In 1985 I came to Dam Neck as the ASWOC Watch Officer Instructor. While there, I incorporated Watch Officer "field trips" to NOPF Dam Neck, Bldg NH-95 Norfolk to "tie-in" NavFac, Command Watch Office, and the Command Center. I left this tour far a tour at ASWOC NSF Diego Garcia. Leaving there, I followed Harry Niestrath through the Senior Enlisted Academy, and then doing my twilight tour in FCDSSA Dam Neck, working on the op program for the ASWMOD's on the carriers. I was fortunate to work on ALL the carriers active in 1992, except the USS Constellation and USS Enterprise which were in the yards. I retired as an AWCS(AW) August 01, 1992 and still live down the road from Dam Neck in Virginia Beach..." [25DEC2010]

We were the gang at the end of the hangar with the shiny blue trailers where pilots and crews practiced emergency flight procedures. I was one of the few females attached there (I think one of two or three). If anyone remembers us, the softball games, the beach parties, body surfing, 'electric beach', the caves, good times ... contact me I'd love to hear from any of you where are you now? I flew the barrier from NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada to NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. Remember the "tailess wonders" that they hid out back of Miami Hangar. I later deployed to NAS Keflavik, Iceland in June of 1961. I stayed most of the time in Iceland after that. Anyone remember when Commander Baer took the two Air Force Nurses on the barrier patrol in Keflavik? How about when one of the Air Force's RC-121's taxied up to the hanger and collapsed its landing gear during the Berlin Buildup in 1962? Remember Commander Reddy, Maintenance Officer in VW-1, had an opportunity to assist his brother in Las Vegas when I was a police officer there. My twin brother Dick Franklin was a radio announcer at VOUS in Argentia - he was the one that got to kiss Jayne Mansfiled during Bob Hope's Xmas show in 1961. Went on to service with VP-23 at NAS Brunswick, Maine changed name to birth name of Franklin. After a short stint at VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and FAETULANT at NAS Breeze Point. I acquired the nickname "Quaker" since nobody had been around us "Mormons", was in Crew-3 for two months and then Crew-1. In VP-23 deployed to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, searched for the Mayflower II, Operated from NAF Recife, Brazil and NAF Belem, Brazil when they hijacked the Santa Maria cruise liner, again in Paramaribo, Suriname in search of the Venezuelan sulphur tanker, Anzoataquay. Also NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the gunrunners to Venezuela during the National Elections in 1963. Had some good times in Panama. Anyone remember when our Radioman, the "Bone", Gilbert took out the radio compartment hatch while in flight? Needless to say some day a fisherman will drag it up in a net between Cuba and Haiti. We laid a wreath at the site of the sinking of the attack submarine, USS Thresher on Memorial Day 1963, LJ-1 was the first plane to reach the search area and were so honored to assist with the ceremony performed by the Governor of Maine. I was assigned to VP-11 ground crew. My memories of Chiefs Eckles, Fry, Lemon and Gaboriault are still strong after 39 years. I made 1st Class AX while on deployment to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. At the same time and old salt named Stanley B. Grindle made Chief. SBG "Sugar Baker Golf" was a WWII sailor (that fact impresses me more more now than it did then). Stan took me under his wing about two days after I checked in to the squadron and I am still in his debt. We made 2 deployments to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, two or three of Springboards, 6 months in NAS Sigonella, Sicily (1964) and a split to NS Rota, Spain (1966). In the spring of 1967 my self and another tech named Barry D. Burnor volunteered to join VP-8 on a 6 month tour to NS Sangley Point, Philippines. We returned in December of 1966 and I was discharged in March 1967, a decision I still regret. I joined a company called Vocaline and flew with my old CO Ray Gault out of NAS Brunswick, Maine in a P2V BUNO: 135558 call sign was "Stopsign", we tested sonobuoys. Those years in VP11 and VP-8 were the best of my life. Some names I remember From VP-11: CDR's Gault, Richardson, Krause, Falkenstein, Smolinski and of course CDR Beatty, LCDR's Vanoski and McCormack. THORPE, AT1 Carl O. CARBETT@AOL.COM "...I started out in the navy in VPMS-11. We commissioned as VP-41 in 1948 and deployed aboard the Seaplane Tender USS Pine Island (AV-12), for Tsingtao, China. I was there in 49, when Chang left for Formosa and Mao came in. We lost a few people in the FASRON at our ramp, a few PBMs, a KINGFISHER from the cruiser ST. PAUL, and most of our hangar. I was an AD in those days, flying with the exec's crew, but switched to AT when we returned stateside in 49. I was an instructor in FAETUPAC, Ream Field, then at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. I got orders to VP-28, Hawaii, but traded duty with a buddy, wound up in FASRON-8, NAS Alameda, California, then commissioned VC-7 at NAS Moffett Field, California, moved to NAS Norfolk, Virginia, back to PACIFIC MISSILE RANGE, PT. MUGU, and from there to VW-3, Det A, NS Sangley Point, Philippines. I keep reading that VQ-1 was commissioned out of VW-1. I was in COM UNIT 38-Team Charley, but my address was VW-3, Det.A, FPO, San Francisco. I would appreciate hearing from any of my old Shipmates at any time......Out of boot camp in early 48, my first squadron was VPMS-11 NAS North Island, San Diego, California. I was an AD striker, flying with the Exec's crew in PBMs. Shortly before we deployed to Tsing-Tao, the designation was changed to VP-41. Came out of China in 1949, after spending some time at Opama Sea Plane base outside of Yokusuka, Japan and after losing some of our aircraft to Mao's people, and after Chang-Kai Shek left for Formose, and decommissioned VP-41. Next duty station-FAETUPAC Ream Field. Still trying to be an AD, I found out that no AD-3s were being made. Switched to AT and took the outfit to NAS North Island, San Diego, California. From there to FASRON-8 NAS Alameda, California. Then commissioned VC-7 at NAS Moffett Field, California and took her to NAS Norfolk, Virginia flying P2V-3C A/C. Commissoned FASRON-51 and then transferredred to NAMTC NAS Point Mugu, California. Left there in 1954 for ComUnit 38C at NS Sangley Point, Philippines working within VW-3. Commissioned VQ-1 June 1, 1954 and took the outfit to NAS Iwakuni, Japan flying Martin Mercator P4Ms. Left there end of 1957 and went back to FAETUPAC Det A NAS Alameda, California. WARREN, Craig S. cswarren3550@sbcglobal.net "...I have been wanting to say something via VPNAVY for some time. I was actually introduced to Naval Aviation in 1949 when my family moved to Squantum, Massachusetts across the bay from NAS Squantum, Massachusetts. One of my fifth grade classmates was one Tommy Fitzsimmons, whose Dad was the CO of NAS Squantum, Massachusetts. One of the prettiest sights I remember from back then was the arrival of the Caroline MARS, which visited NAS Squantum, Massachusetts for a few days about April 1950. I also remember the PBY's, PB4Y's and an occasional P2V, along with the other resident aircraft. Also made a couple trips to NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts, including a field trip with the Aeronautics Class from North Quincy High School in 1957. In 1957 I joined the Navy and after a few schools went to the USS Midway as an Aviation Guided Missileman (GF), serving in GM Division from 1958 to 1961. In the meantime, the GF rating was disestablished and I became an AT2. I then served at MCAAS Yuma, AZ during 1961. When the "Berlin Wall" was put up, I reenlisted and was sent to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii to serve in AEWBarRonPac from 1961 to 1964. I then was transferredred to NAS Moffett Field, California to serve with FAETUPAC Det. 1 (later Detachment NAS Moffett Field, California) from 1964 to 1967. We worked mainly with VP-31, but also worked with most of the other resident VP Squadrons at one time or another. I took an Honorable Discharge in August 1967, thinking I could save a shakey marriage, but was unsuccessful at that. Those nearly ten years in the Navy left mostly positive memories, and maybe I should have reenlisted to complete the 20 or 30 for retirement. Instead, I tried various jobs and finally started College in 1974, and graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1982. I have been working as a Design Engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation up to the present. I did join the US Naval Institute to keep up with the Navy and try to attend the "Amigo Airsho" here in El Paso at least when the Blue Angels are performing. I still remember seeing a P5M lifting off from Buckner Bay in Okinawa in 1958 with the help of JATO bottles. What a sight! There really has been nothing else like the VP Navy. I retired from working as a Transportation Engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation. My first duty station (USS Midway) is now a museum on the San Diego waterfront. MCAAS Yuma became MCAS Yuma. AEWBarRonPac and NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii are long gone. FAETUPAC and NAS Moffett Field, California have disappeared and /or changed. Hello to all who served at those locations. Another Aviation Rating that seems to have been lost in the shadows of time was the Aviation Guided Missileman rating (GF). I spent the five weeks of AN-P School at NATTC NAS Norman, Oklahoma and then 24weeks of GF-A School at NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee from February to August 1958. I don't know when the rating was established, but it was disestablished in 1960. We were a rather proud group and most were somewhat heartbroken when we were told we had to change to some other rating with no immediate training in the new rating. Several people were sent to a missile test set school after the GF rating was done away with. I never did hear a good explanation for the disstablishment of the rating except that somebody felt that the airborne missiles could be handled by Aviation Ordnancemen and tested by Aviation Fire Control Technicians or Aviation Electronics Technicians. I made GF2 in 1960 and was almost immediately changed to AT2. We seemed to be in a position where nobody knew what to do with us and we were usually one of the few divisions with an air conditioned shop in the late 1950's. Some people may have felt we were a little too "free-wheeling" and maybe not quite as disciplined as we should have been. Oh,well. It was a fun couple years and sometimes a bit amusing to see the confused expression on the face of anyone we tried to explain our purpose on the ship without violating some security rule. Are there many left who remember the rating?..." [BIO Updated 09JUN2010 | BIO/E-Mail Updated 01AUG2007 | E-Mail Updated 25JUN2001 | 21JAN2001]
