STRONG, CDR Tom tom.e.strong@earthlink.net "...I served about 2.5 years with VP-62 between 1989 and 1991 as an OSAM NFO. The experience was great right up to the last moment when the Navy said to leave active duty and become a SELRES. Nothing against the SELRES bunch, but I needed full time employment and took a job with NOAA as a navigator on the WP-3D hurricane hunter variant. After about 5 years, and mainly due to a pilot shortage and hiring freeze, NOAA sent me back to flight training. I squeeked through and became a Lake Seawolf and DHC-6 pilot. In an ironic twist of fate, 3 years later, NOAA then sent me back to the Navy as a pilot and a tour with the Naval Research Lab (NRL). What a great unit and bunch of folks! They were apprehensive at first since I was a trans-vest-FO but eventually they taught me everything a growing P-3 pilot needed to know. Now I'm back at NOAA and punching through hurricanes from the front seat and loving every minute of it. I'm a CDR now and still view my tour at VP-62 as some of the best years of my life..."
