While there we flew P2V-6's then P2V-6m's (VA(HM)-10). We were called vomit 10. Then we went to P2V-5Fs. The last deployment I was on was to NAS Iwakuni, Japan. I remember on the return leg home we had to stop at Okinawa and trade our fairly new P2V-5Fs for VP-4s Old P2V-6 and we had them scattered all across the Pacific. My crew was one of the very lucky few to make it home on time. On Qwagilan Island We found a cracked exhaust stack on a 15 hour check and thought we were stuck but another crew flew in and had an engine change. They were gracious enough to give us their Exhaust stack and thats why we made it home on time. Our pilot was LTjg Lawless. WE recently remodeled our home and am unable to locate my cruise book but when I find it I'll write again and list all the crew. I retired as ADCS from NAS Lemoore, California in August 1980. CAHILL, Kevin R. kevin1fe@aol.com "...I retired after spending all 26 years in P-3 Orions. I was lucky to have spent all my tours in great squadrons. Started my flying career as a second mech in VP-44, 71-75, then moved on to become a TAR in VP-92. Qualified as a Flight Engineer Jan 76. Orders then to VP-69 from 79-82. A follow on tour back to VP-92 from 82-87. Moved from there to VP-68 from 87-91. Didn't have enough so went back "home" to VP-92 from 91-96 when I finally retired to a great job as an Aviation Safety Inspector with the FAA in Boston. As I look back did it all from pumping a grease gun on the flight line, to Maintenance Chief, all while in a flying billet. Logged almost 9000 flight hours as a P-3 FE and am proud of it. In my later years as the MMCPO I was extremely proud of the maintenance folks that gave the extra effort to get the aircraft "up". The best part was when I preflighted then flew the aircraft on a PMCF. Usually never having a gripe to write up when we were done. The VP-Navy was my Navy and am proud to have been a part of it. Thanks Shipmates!..." [07FEB98]

CAIN, AK3 Walter M. walter_cain@yahoo.com "...Straight out of boot camp in NAS North Island, San Diego, California I was sent to VT-29 and was attached there from Dec 1967 until Dec 1969. I worked for ADR Robert D. Huggett and my Division Chief was Wade Lovern. I worked in the Tool Room until Chief Lovern made me Night Check Supervisor. I thought it was great that my Chief thought enough of me to handling the Supply Department. Chief Lovern and I got transfered the same month to the USS America where I worked on the flight deck on Cat 1 until I made AK3. I was transfered to supply to work with him again where he made me Night Check supervisor again. I ordered all the aviation supplies for all the squadrons and made a world cruise that took us to the Vietnam. I became a Shellback on that cruise and since we crossed the International Date Line on Thanksgiving Day we celebrated it twice. We stopped once to go swimming out in the middle of the Pacific and I drove off of the elevator. It didn't seem very high until I was in the air on my way down. What a dive. Spent lots of pesos in "PO Town", Shillings in Sidney, more peosos in Rio and a lot of Hong Kong Dollars. It was a great cruise. I had everyone in my division thinking that I was smuggling a girl back to the USA from Sidney. I did spend a few days with a girl name Janet Smedes who wanted to be a stowaway which several buddies knew about but I never told them she wasn't on the ship. Every night I would take a tray out of the mess decks as if I was going to feed her and then disappear for several hours. I had everyone guessing and really believing that she was on the ship. While at VT-29 the duty section had the job of scrubbing down the flight line. We would have about 15 guys with scrub brushes pushing around a 55 gallons drum ofr MEK and then wash it down with a fire hose. I came up with an idea of nailing the scrub brush heads to a wooden pallet with the MEK on the pallet and then pull it with one of the tractors that we used to moved the planes around. That reduced the work down to just 2 guys. My chief thought that was a great idea and apparently someone else did also because when I was stationed in NAS Oceana with VF-74 they used the same idea there but instead of a wooden pallet they used a medal one and put a sprayer on the MEK drum. I bet someone took my idea and made a fortune off of it..." [28NOV2009]

Spent alot of hours "trapping" in LR5! With VP-93 "Executioners" as a SELRES Aug 84 - Decommisioning (Sept 94). Had great AT's in NAS Bermuda, NS Rota, Spain, Lajes, UK (during Desert Storm), Key West (Haiti), NAS Sigonella, Sicily (Operation Sharp Guard -- where we were hosted by none other than my old squadron VP-24). VP was a great ride, and a wonderful family. The flying days are over (since VP was shut down at Selfridge ANGB (Detroit), but the spirit lives on! Sorry to see both my squadrons decommissioned. Did command NR TSC 1173 ( NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii) from 94-96, and "rejoined" the VP community at RIMPAC96. The TSC world and RIMPAC96 was like a VP Reunion! Presently CO of NR CVN69 USS Dwight D. CAMPBELL, AEC James M. "Soupy" Retired blandjcampbell@aol.com "...During my 20 year career in the US Navy I was stationed in VP-47 from 1957-1960. I was Crew Electrician in Crew 8 and remember many exciting flights when Rocky Bamford was our PPC. I was in VP-40 from 1966-1968. This was a very short tour as it was the final year of sea duty. They wouldn't let me extend for the third year at NAS Cubi Point, Philippines. I was a First Class and worked in the AE shop. In 1968 I transferred to NAS Moffett Field, California for a tour with NAMTRADET. Buck Williams was our CO. I taught P-3B electric power systems to pilots and FEs. I taught a couple of other systems but that was a long time ago and I have forgotten their designations. I made AEC during this tour. After NAMTRADET I transferred to VP-46 where I was shop chief in the Electric Shop, AME Shop and Operations and finally I was the Drug/Alcohol Education contact. I made five (5) deployments to NAS Iwakuni, Japan with VP-47 and VP-46, one (1) to NAS Adak, Alaska with VP-46, and one (1) to NS Sangley Point, Philippines with VP-40. I have nothing but good memories from my entire career. After retiring I went to work for Lockheed in Sunnyvale, CA. on the Trident Missile Program. While with Lockheed I lived and worked in Sunnyvale, Washington DC, and Helensburgh, Scotland retiring as a Senior Manager in December 2000. My wife, Beth, and I now live in Oak Harbor, WA. on Whidbey Island. Retirement is great. I was also elected and seated on the Oak Harbor City Council in January 2006 for a four year term. NAS Whidbey Island, Washington is the home of the VP-1, VP-40, VP-46, VP-69, VQ-1 and VQ-2. It is also home-port for 14 VAQ squadrons who fly EA6B Aircraft. We have a great, albeit, small PBY Museum and recently a Memorial to all VP Sailors was erected downtown. I would enjoy hearing from any of my old Shipmates. If you make it to the Island I would be glad to give you a tour of both bases, the city and Whidbey Island..." [09APR2007]
CAMPBELL, AMM1c James M. camp@interpac.net "...I was in headquarters squadron of FAW-2, and was at MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii for about all of 1943 except for a deployment in VP-12 for about 6 weeks to NAS Midway Island. I was then transferred in to PATSU 1-11 which was deployed to the Solomon Islands and the island hopping campaign from Guadalcanal to Munda, Ondonga, Green Island to Emereau,Manus and then back to the States in the fall of 1944. I knew Herman Terry in the metal shop as well as "anvilhead," "Duck" Mallard, Marlow and others. I was a part time flight crew member as well, as an instrument mechanic while on the ground duty roster. I had been to gunnery school at Purcell Okla, on the way to Treasure Island Ca. where we boarded LST-448. About half way to Pearl Hardor, the steering linkage motor "burned out" and we had hand-steer to return to San Diego to get a new one. Then on the way to Pearl and more than halfway there, the motor burned out again and we had to steer the LST by hand. We got off the LST in Pearl and went ashore onto Ford Island. There we had two decker iron cots, which the master at arms would come in and beat on the bedstead with a billy club to wake us up in the morning. There at Ford Island, I saw my first and only Admiral all of the time I was in the Navy. I had made AMM1/c while in the islands and was wearing a hash mark when I got back to the NAS Alameda, California where we bought new clothes. As we were on the ferry over to town to buy our clothes "new dress blues" we met our first female sailors. One I was talking to was a ACMM and she had been in the Navy nine months! We had to box up our dress blues and personal gear while at NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. in 1943. Therein was my clothes as well as a gold high school class ring and wrist watch. None of which were ever seen again. The box never got home. I am still on active duty and am stationed in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. I work as the Program Manager for Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems in the Naval Air Systems Command. I plan on retiring in two years and going back to my beloved Tennessee. Anyone out there who remembers the "Bad Boys of Brunswick?" The best times of my career were the two years I spent with VP-23.
