Memorial Picture "...KOONTZ, Kenneth Joe...Lt. Col. Kenneth Koontz, a civilian simulator instructor and member of the 96th Flying Training Squadron was killed in a traffic accident on U.S. Route 90. While a LT in the Navy, he served as a pilot in VP-4 from 1994 - 1998. Kenneth Joe Koontz and his loving wife, Melissa Lou Hill Koontz, along with their two daughters, Madison Glenn and Marley Ann, of Brackettville Texas, went to their heavenly home Sunday, April 14, 2013. They are survived by their son and brother, Kenneth Zachary Koontz. Ken and Melissa blessed us with their love and acceptance. They saw the best in everyone and raised their children to do the same. God blessed us all by sharing them with each of us. Ken had a passion for the great outdoors, flying, and loved working with his hands. He had a love for life and could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Uncle Kenny was a favorite play partner for all his nieces and nephews. One of his happiest moments was when his son and best friend, Zachary, was born. Melissa was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She spoke from the heart and shared her faith and love. Melissa's beauty shined from her eyes and radiated forth and warmed us all deeply. The brightest smiles were to be found when she was watching Madison act, Marley playing sports, and Zach creating with Legos. She loved sitting and having a cup of tea and sharing her life with her prayer partners and Bible study groups. Madison and Marley were both shining examples of young Christian ladies. Both of them list the book Heaven is for Real as a favorite. Both young ladies saw the beauty and goodness in others before anything else. Madison lit up the world with her smile on the sideline cheering and on the stage taking on a variety of roles. She loved Tae Kwon Do and teaching others about this and The Lord. She had a passion for music which she had hoped to share and develop at Texas A & M Corpus Christi. Her words of hope and listening heart will be missed by the many who counted her as a friend. Marley always had a smile on her face and kind words for others. She loved her friends and family and enjoyed spending time with all. Marley was always taking care of animals and loved her sweet dogs, Bella and Sammy. Her Facebook page reflected her strong faith. God is love. God is life. Our hearts mourn the loss of Ken, Melissa, Madison, and Marley. They are survived by a large family and extended family, mothers, Selma Clements Koontz and Lucinda Wilson Hill; brothers and sisters, Dan and Pam Koontz, Kimberlee and Mike Humble, David and Renee Koontz, Lucinda Kelly, Bettie and Steve Fedrizzi, Emily and Randall Bolander, Hilda and Andy Wertz, Maggie and Barry Johnson, Sam and Carol Hill, and Jane Hill; nieces, nephews and cousins, Megan and Leslie Bolander, Heather and Scott Gilbertson and Emily Fedrizzi, Matthew Henniger and Cinda Kelly, Emma, Melanie, Hannah and Caroline Wertz, Ella, Charles and Lillie Johnson, Tracy and Angel Hill, Chris Jorgenson and Richie Hill, Graham and Grady Koontz, Ryan Humble, Reid and Charlotte Humble, and Macy Koontz. They were preceded in death by father and grandfather, G. Doyle Koontz and Richard C. Hill; brother, Richard D. Hill, and nephews, William D. Hill and Gary Hill. Visitation for Ken, Melissa, Madison, and Marley will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the Brackettville Civic Center. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Brackettville Civic Center. A private burial for the immediate family will follow. In lieu of flowers, the families are requesting for donations to be made to the Koontz Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will honor the family's dedication and love for education and Brackettville. Donations will be accepted through the Brackettville ISD, P.O. Box 586, Brackettville, TX 78832. Please visit our website at http://www.sunsetfuneralhomes.com and sign our online guestbook. Memorial Picture "...KOOY, H. Peter...Herman PETER Kooy - Captain, USN (Ret) - 10 Nov. 1914 -31 March 2003. H. Peter Kooy was born to Architect and Civil Engineer Cornelius and wife Johanna Kooy on 10 November 1917 in Weehawken, New Jersey. He attended New York University and graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelors degree in Government. He graduated from the Navy Flight School in Pensacola and was a designated Naval Aviator. He finished Line School in Newport, Rhode Island. His active duty military career began in 1940 and he was commissioned as Ensign on 7 December 1941. The entire unit deployed to Pearl Harbor and was re-designated as Bombing Squadron 101 and equipped with Liberator B-24s- the first such aircraft used in the Navy. The squadron deployed to the Southwest Pacific, flying reconnaissance and bombing missions from the New Habrides and Guadalcanal. The squadron lost 30 percent of its aircraft during this employment. Captain Kooy was Commanding Officer of VP-24 which deployed to Malta in 1953-1955. Forty-five hundred officers and men were involved in that operation. In 1946 he was appointed Executive Officer of VP-111 that was involved in anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic and Europe. This involved coordinating flight and training activities of 275 officers and men, and 12 large Lockheed Neptunes. Between 1955 and 1958 he served as Executive Officer of the NROTC at Ohio State University, handling recruiting, curriculum matters of University midshipmen. From 1958 to 1960, he held the position as Plans, Operations, and Assistant Chief of Staff of Fleet Air Wings Atlantic based in Norfolk. Between 1960 and 1963, he was ordered to the Pentagon where he was Programs Manager for anti-submarine Aircraft in the Undersea Programs Directorate. He then took over as Assistant Director of Support Systems, which concerned budgeting, planning and programming of all Navy training of such systems. In 1963, he was ordered to Boston as the Navy's Representative at the Raytheon Company. As such, he was technical and contract administrator for the Navy and all other programs performed by Raytheon Company for the Military. He supervised a staff of about 100 people. Captain Kooy earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Metal, American Theater, and Asiatic Theater Campaign ribbons. After retirement, his feeling of duty to his country called him back. He was asked to start a NJROTC in the city of Manchester, New Hampshire. He answered that call and taught for seven years, driving 130 miles daily through snow and ice to teach high school students. Captain Kooy's wife of 48 years is the former Miss Mozelle Porter, a native of Rural Retreat, VA. They have two sons, David Peter Kooy of New York and Christian Porter Kooy of Dallas. A sister, Judith Kooy Uhlig and niece Christina Uhlig Hechard and husband Scott; and a nephew Peter Kooy Uhlig and wife Nancy survive. Just recently, Captain Kooy received a letter from former student Colonel Michael Therrien, a teacher's finest reward. It reads as follows: "Sir, you may not remember me but I was your first cadet commander. I had trouble at the Air Force Academy and almost got kicked out because of a poor attitude. You intervened by calling and writing the ROTC commander and went to bat for me. You believed in a 20 year old kid and never gave up .So what happened to me?" "I stayed in the Air Force and make it my career. I made Colonel (06) and have been in 26 years. I am seriously thinking of going back and teaching NJROTC and doing for other kids what you helped me do for myself. . Whenever I came across my troops that had a poor attitude, I helped them, versus ignoring them. You were always on my mind." "I never ever forgot that someone took the time to help. Without your help in the beginning, I don't know what would have happened." "Sir, this is to salute you and to say thank you. If you get a chance, tell me what has happened in your life." Colonel Mike Therrien, USAF Hanscom AFB, MA. Retired Navy Chaplain, Captain James G. Goode, a long time friend of the family will conduct the services..." Those airships held 1-million cubic feet of helium and had a large radar bubble on its belly. It also held a radar dome on top. It was quite impressive to see. And a real devil to take off.
