We called LQ-9 the Flying Spoon after the Plane Comander CDR D. D. Spoon (somewhere I still have my crew hat that he bought for each one of us on the crew I will look I may have a picture that would have the BUNO). The photo looks like it was taken in NS Rota, Spain around late summer 1961. I still have a photo of LQ-5. The picture was taken over the Chesapeak Bay in preperation for the upcoming Good Will Tour to South America for short UNITOS (note the extra markings between the LQ and the BUNO). O'BEIRNE, VICE ADMIRAL Francis (Frank) http://www.obeirnefamily.mcmail.com/FamilyO'Beirne/some_notable_enterpisers.htm "...Vice Admiral Francis (Frank) O'Beirne (b. 1903), son of Edward, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1926 and served on the battleship USS Nevada and the aircraft carrier USS Lexington where he decided to become a Navy flier. He won his gold wings at the NAS Pensacola, Florida, in 1929, and was assigned to Fighting Squadron One based at San Diego, California. There he practiced three-plane aerobatics. A consequence was that he was one of a three-plane Army-Navy stunting team led by Colonel Charles Lindbergh that demonstrated formation aerobatics at the 1929 National Air Races, Cleveland, Ohio. He became a flight instructor at NAS Pensacola, Florida, then attended the Naval Postgraduate School at Annapolis, and in 1935 obtained his MS degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan. Over the next three years he served successively on the battleships USS West Virginia and USS California as a naval aviator and then in the precommissioning crew of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He flew fighters, dive bombers, observation float planes and flying boats during his active flying career. Frank then became a staff engineering officer at Coronado, California. In 1940 he was transferred to NAS Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as commanding officer of VP-22 which flew PBY (Catalina) flying boats. In late summer of 1941 he took two aircraft of his squadron on the first US Navy flight from Pearl Harbor to Australia and New Guinea. The purpose was to carry Army Air Force pilots to select sites for B-17 bomber bases in the little-known areas of the Dutch East Indies in the event of war with the Japanese, which in fact began about three months later. Frank's second in command on this mission was Lieut. Thomas Moorer who much later became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor destroyed six of the squadron's aircraft by bombing and strafing and seriously damaged the remainder. In less than a month the squadron was re-equipped with new aircraft from California and Frank took it to Darwin, Australia, and then to Java where it joined the aircraft of the Asiatic Fleet already there and three seaplane tenders. They moved about as the Japanese advanced, operating out of various small harbors in the Java/Celebes regions. After eleven of his twelve PBYs had been destroyed in combat or combat-related accidents, the lone survivor was able to reach Perth, Australia, in March 1942 where the squadron was disestablished. After a few months commanding a seaplane tender, the USS Childs, in the Indian Ocean, Frank became Naval Intelligence Officer on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur, at Brisbane. He was transferred to Washington in 1943 to become a member of the Joint War Plans Committee that planned the final assaults on Japan. In command of the escort carrier USS Breton, he helped support the preparations of Admirals Halsey and Spruance for those assaults before the atomic bombs eliminated the need for them. Between the end of World War II and his retirement in 1963 Frank, by then an Admiral, had some 14 assignments. Some were administrative. For two years he was Assistant Naval Attaché in London, then a Member of the Continental U.S. Defense Planning Group of the Joint Chiefs of Staff which included the Canada-U.S. Defense Planning Committee. As Director of Operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff he was responsible for the planning and direction of joint exercises and operations and on occasion briefed the President of the United States concerning them. As Commander of Field Operations of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project he was responsible for the accountability, storage, maintenance, shipment, and military testing of all U.S. nuclear weapons and the training of all military personnel in the handling of them..." I was there so long everyone thought I was a SELRES. One great squadron with many fond memories. Loved the flying and professionalism of all the people in the squadron. As we all know we could fly circles around the "common Navy" folks. From VP-60 I went to another great squadron VP-68 and retired from there in 1990. Since then I have been following my wife Karen, a former VP-60 Cobra PN and now a LCDR, through her career. We are currently in Fallon, NV and I am working for Boeing on contract maintenance for the former "TOPGUN" school. Would love to hear from former Cobra's and Blackhawks..." O'BRIEN, CDR J. L. Circa 2005 http://reserves.navy.mil/ "...CDR O'Brien was born on McCord AFB, Tacoma, Washington and was raised on various Air Force Bases. She attended ROTC at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, earning a BS in both Biology and Russian. She was commissioned in December 1988. CDR O'Brien's first tour of duty after commissioning was as a general unrestricted line officer assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, DC. She worked as Assistant VP Placement Officer and ACIP/ACP Officer until being selected for flight training in December 1989. After basic aviation training at NAS Pensacola, Florida and advanced navigator training at Mather AFB, CA, she earned her Naval Flight Officer wings in July 1991. She reported to Oceanographic Development Squadron EIGHT (VXN-8), NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in September 1991. She qualified as Oceanographic Project Coordinator and participated in detachments around the globe. At VXN-88 she served as Assistant Admin Officer, Legal Officer, Assistant Operations Officer, and Communications Officer. Upon the opening of Patrol Squadrons to female aviators, CDR O'Brien detached VXN-8 in September 1993 and reported to Patrol Squadron THREE ZERO (VP-30) for Fleet replacement P3C NFO training. She reported aboard Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN (VP-16) in April 1994 where she qualified as Patrol Plane Tactical Coordinator (TACCO), Mission Commander and primary NFO NATOPS instructor (blue card) for both Navigator/Communicator and Tactical Coordinator seat positions. She served as Personnel Officer, NAVCOM NATOPS Officer, Line Division Officer, TACCO NATOPS Officer, and NATOPS Division Officer. CDR O'Brien completed deployments to NAS Keflavik, Iceland; NS Roosevelt Roads, PR; Howard AFB, Panama; and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. In 1997 CDR O'Brien reported as a Selected Reservist to Patrol Squadron SIX SIX (VP-66) at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. There she qualified as TACCO, Mission Commander, and primary NFO NATOPS instructor. She has served as Assistant Operations Officer, Assistant Maintenance Officer, Training Officer, Administration Officer, Maintenance Officer, and Tactics Officer. While in VP-66, CDR O'Brien has completed active duty periods in Lann Bihoue, France; Japan; Anchorage, Alaska; Hawaii; and the Caribbean.
