RHOADS, Bill G. BGR101@aol.com "...From June 1966 until Sept 1969 I was a Flight Communicator on LN8 (151354) VP-45 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. I was one of the "Black shoe" " Radioman rate that flooded the VP squadrons during that time. I was a RM2, went to VP-30 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and on to VP-45 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida in 66. Received my wings in early 67 and aquired over 2400 hours as 1st tech and flight comm on LN8 and other aircraft. First PPC was LCDR R. W Steuben. and last PPC was LCDR Hollister. Flew with some really great people and a couple of not so great ones also. Deployed to BDA and Newfoundland. And NATO flight to Germany in 1967 and several "Q" flights to South America on single plane missions. Sadly I missed the VP-45 Reunion but hope to do the next one. I was a civilian pilot instructor when in squadron and flew out of the old Herlong Field. I also was lucky eneough to get lots of time as PIC on the P-3A and B and later was type rated in the L188 series aircraft. Bill G. I remember losing the the Mercator and having to accept the P2V-6 with its 3350 turbo compounds that wouldn't run more than 200 or 300 hrs. I later went to work for Delta airlines and found that the engine didn't perform any better there either (DC-7). At the time I was on TAD on a sub out of Key West and had complained bitterly about the assignment. After the accident I really did not want to fly again but Cdr. Chapman came down to pick me up and made me fly the plane back to NAS Jacksonville, Florida, thankfully. RHODES, AO1 Jerry R. jrhodes10@sc.rr.com "...I served with VS-31 at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island from August 1962 until going to AO "B" School in October 1962. Worked in Ordnance and also assigned to workingout schedules for Air Crew for last two years. Met and had many friends in the Squadron during this long time. It was preferred sea duty so did not have to be reassigned unless requested at that time. I also flew as Aircrew startingon the AF's and the S2F's for six of those years. I got out of the Navy in August 1962 as an AO1 to raise my children alone. Later remarried and we had five children to raise between us. Lost my wife in September 2005 and am still living in Columbia, S.C. where I moved to after discharge from the Navy. Would love to hear from any former Shipmates still around and share someof our stories with each other. Only former VS-31 members that I am in good contact with is Judson M. Brodie AOC and retired as LCDR after getting a Commission. He is 87 and in fairly good health and an excellent memory of many of our Shipmates. The other is LT(jg) Hawley Brooks who left the Navy after his first tour was finished. He was a pilot in the S2F's..." [29APR2009]
