Was on Crew 5 with Lt Jerry Spitz as PPC with Gordy Day as co-pilot. Then with (Red Bird) Adams with Russ Mowery as co-pilot.Transf. to VT-27 at NAAS New Iberia, La. for shore duty. Then to VP-11 1962 to 1965, which included transition from P2V7's to P-3. Then final tour at NAS North Island, San Diego, California with RVAW-111 a Hawkeye training squadron till 1970 then transf to fleet reserve..." I would love to hear from the old navy P5M and P2V sailors. It was a great life. I know that feeling must be shared by many. Sometimes I wish I could relive those days! Well, I am presently in Sunshine Arkansas. 6 kids and now 13 grand kids and 1 great grand son. My oldest son promoted to Captain usn this past December soon to become Commodore 1st Amphibious Fleet North Island, San Diego, California. ROBERTS, ATR3 Dale daler@nep.net "...I started my 2-year active duty at NAS North Island, San Diego, California in 1966 with VAW-11 Det Romeo, where I did all of my aircrew training in Willy Fudds. I still have my "plankholder" certificate when VAW-111 was commissioned on 04/28/67 and Det Romeo became Det-33. (U.S.S. Kearsarge CVS-33) I did a WESPAC cruise with missions flown on "Yankee Station" and over Wonson Harbor, N. Korea, right after the U.S.S. Pueblo hijacking. I was released from active duty in Dec.1968 to Fleet Standby Reserve. Since then, I have only had contact with "Rock" Hagemeister and Dennis Getman, who ended up flying for one of the major airlines. Sure would like to hear from anyone connected to VAW-111 Det-33 from this period of time..." [10OCT2004]

I spent time in the Avionics Shop and flew as a Radionman on the P4M's, later when we got the old P2V & the 2 A3D-1Q. I crossed over and shared the A3 flying with ATC Thomas and AT1 Heavenor. Some of my running mates were AM2 Bob Stoltz, AT3 Rod Harrod, PNSN Bob Fedak, and AO3 Cruz. I played on the Squadron basketball & softball teams. Stationed at NAS North Island, San Diego, California and deployed with USS Ranger on WesPac till June 1973. Then crossed to VA-115 on the USS Midway till July 1975. Anyway, made a career of the Navy, and retired in 1997 (Broken Service). VAW-111 was actually a great time because I was 19 years old, and too stupid to know any better.
