BOOKs:  Title: The Airmen and the Headhunters: A True Story of Lost Soldiers, Heroic Tribesmen and the Unlikeliest Rescue of World War II - Includes -- among the airmen of the title -- the crew of a PB4Y of the VPB-101 Squadron that crash-landed in Borneo on January 13, 1945. There were two planes, a USAAF Liberator in November 1944 (23rd Squadron, Fifth Bomb Group. 13th Army) and a Liberator of the VPB 101 in January 1945, that were both shot up in Brunei Bay and of which the surviving men ended up in inland Borneo. Of the USAAF plane, 7 survived the time in Borneo, of the Navy plane, only 4: Graham, Harms, Robbins and Shepherd. (What happened to the five others who survived the shooting up that brought the plane down but did not live to leave Borneo is in the book, too.) These four Navy men eventually joined up with the Army men and were all rescued, hidden, fed and even clothed by ex-headhunters who went back to taking heads -- but only Japanese heads -- on behalf of the Yanks. Finally, after 6-7 months, the eleven airmen were flown out by Austers, one by one, from a bamboo airstrip in the middle of Borneo built by the tribespeople under direction of a mad British major. It's quite a story and it took me 10 years and three continents to piece the facts of it together and write it up. [23DEC2007]
