HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...This was penned on an ASW Patrol on Christmas Eve, 1981, by members of CAC-10 during our NAS Keflavik, Iceland deployment of 1981. The author's were myself, LT Bill Duxbury, AW3 Dave Bond, and I'm sure others from the crew. VP-10, CAC-10 NAS Keflavik, Iceland..." Contributed by HOUDE, Al billsfan4093@aol.com [19DEC2001]

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the plane

Not a submarine detected, 'twas such a shame.

The SP was nestled all snug in the rack

And dreaming of landings that didn't break backs.

While comfortably loitering a league above water

We'd just settled in for a sixteen bouy monitor.

When back on the grams there arose such a clatter

The Tacco leapt up to find out the mattert

He ran down the aisle, his arms were a flappin'

To peer over shoUlders to see .what was happenin'.

The moon-lighted crests of the waves far below

Made objects appear with an eery halo.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,

A Type Three on the surface, as if nothing was feared.

There stood an old skipper so nimble and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be Illyich.

"On Ivan, on Boris, Alexie, Kosygin,

On Vladimir and Gorshkov, Nadia, Nikita".

"Bring up the radar, shine it full blast,

Then start up the engines, we'll travel 'MAX FAST"'.

"We'll keep up these antics as we sail through the gap,

The WOO will go crazy, oh what a flap".

"Then we'll go sinker, so as not to be seen,

Even their SOSUS won't be wise to our scheme".

I pulled back the power, the plane fell from the sky,

The water came nearer, we barely kept dry.

We flew at the sub with all deliberate speed,

But the tales of old Illyicb we failed to heed.

We lowered the IRDS to see things more clearly,

And picked up the skipper, rotund and quite cheery.

The uniform he wore was one quite unique,

All red and white trim and black boots on his feet.

The crew was excited as the plane flew on by,

Where we spotted old Illyich with a twinkle in his eye.

I turned to the 2P, his eyes were transfixed,

"Could it be true, St. Nick's a Bolshevik?"

We turned back to the skipper, we had ruined his stealth,

He spoke to his XO who looked like an elf.

And laying a finger aside of his nose,

Into the depths the submarine dove.

But I heard him exclaim ere he dove out of sight:

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, and to all a good flight!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM CAC-1O THE BOUNTY HUNTERS
