We were based in NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and NAS Trinidad, British West Indies. I then was transferred to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island and AirAsDevLant which was an anti-submarine testing squadron. We developed rockets, search lights and even worked on the "yahoodi" project with a TBM. I then was transferred to VB-112 and upon wars end joined VB-114 in the NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal and NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. I retired from Braniff Airways after 35 years and now instruct pilots for Flight Safety Boeing. I am looking for information on Lance Murphy..." Hudson of Hemet, CA, who is looking for any of the men who may have served with him in VPB-112 from 1943-45. He was an Aviation Machinist's Mate 2/c who served as Ground Crew Plane Captain and tail gunner aboard a PB4Y-1 designated "K 90" flying anti-submarine patrols out of Port Lyautey, French Morocco and, later, Dunkeswell, England. The squadron skipper was Capt. Paranak. He would be delighted to hear from any of his crew or squadron mates, especially a sailor from Philadelphia named "Swag" Swaghoffer, his "best buddy."..." I then made the transition to PB4Y-1 at NAS Chincoteague, Virginia. I joined a flight crew with PPC LT John E. Stevenson in command. My classmate ENSIGN Alan Ray Larson and were assigned as Co-Pilot/Navigators. AMMC L. R. Thurston (Plane Captain) and ARM3 G. S. Bradford (Radio). Other crew members were AMM3 S. E. Northrup, AOM2 R. L Packard, ARM3 J. Haggerty, ARM3 C.C. Miller, S1 R. D. Ricard and ARM3 W. R. Thomas. In October 1943 we flew a new Ford built B-24J (PB4Y-1 Liberator) to North Africa via the southern ATC route and joined VPB-112 at NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. We operated out of there, the Rock of Gibraltar and Agidar. On 13JAN45 VPB-112 started their transfer of planes and equipment to Upottery, County Devon, England. My crew was in the first group to make the transfer and landed during the worst snowstorm of the century. We joined FAW-7 at that point and served until the war ended in Europe. My crew flew 27 missions and I had about 600 hours in the PB4Y-1. Flying Anti-Sub Patrols was hours and hours of pure boredom interjected with brief moments of shear terror!
