SALUTE TO VP-11
VP-11 was a veteran of Naval campaigns from Kaneohe Bay to Leyte over a 35 month period. A summation of their accomplishments includes the following:
Received the first shots of World War II from the Japanese and probably suffered the first u.s. casuality of the Pacific theatre.
Flew an estimated 48,000 hours in combat areas.
Had 31 who lost their lives or were missing in action.
Had 3nine taken prisoner by the Japanese - two died while in prison.
First complete Patrol Squadron to be deployed to the South Pacific.
First to arrive for second deployment.
Fine-tuned the traditional U.S. Navy seaplane patrol missions.
Introduced new innovations that led to the Black Cat night operation.and fine-tuned the techniques.
Successfully performed the longest torpedo attack against the enemy in history (900 nautical miles).
Spent the longest time and completed more missions (traditional patrol and Black Cat) than any other squadron.
21 (estimated) survivors rescued from the open sea; 17 (estimated) by landing in sheltered waters; 2.5 wounded Marines and the crew of a C-47 saved by sacrificing PBY on reef until destroyer arrived.
219 Australians evacuated from behind enemy line with 17 river landing.
Probably ranks among the top three patrol squadrons in tonnage of enemy shipping destroyed or disabled.

It measures 7 1/2 inches in diameter and has two mounting screws on its back. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Any history on this VP-11 Seal would be appreciated. Thank you and Good Hunting!  "...The 7 inch metal insign was mounted on the Main Entrance when VP-11 was at NAS Brunswick, Maine. I have VP-23 and one of VP-44. I'm the Brunswick Historian for the Maine Air Musuem. We are in the process of getting a P2V-3 from the Navy. I'm also writting a book on the History of NAS Brunswick, Maine and would like to here from any former navy personal that were statation at NAS Brunswick, Maine. "...That design is the "official" configuration of the plaque/patch. Note the right rear hoof extended straight out rather than hooked down. Also, the tail does not come back to overlap the left rear leg. They have an original patch on display at the Naval Aviation Museum..."
