While doing my two years shore duty running the NAS Jacksonville, Florida terminal, I was about to get orders for sea duty. I knew a chief that had a lot of pull and he ask if I would like to go to VP-16. He said that it would cost me a case of liquor. Done deal I said. A CDR flew down from NAS Norfolk, Virginia in a Beechcraft and picked up the booze. My orders were cut and October 1959 I checked into VP-16. The chief already had me assigned to logs and records. Here is my story.

The squadron was getting ready for the Annual Admistrative Inspection. I worked real hard for about a week when I was approached by the leading chief and XO. Goodell the barracks is one big mess. Get up there, relieve the Master-at-Arms, and do the job I know you are capable of. Wow, what a mess. The inventory of blankets, sheets, pillow cases, etc. was dumbfounding. It so happened that a close friend of mine was a big wheel at NAS Supply. I went to him and gave him my problem. VP-16 was in the the old wooden barracks 930 at the time. I will not use his name but he told me to make a list and he would take care of it. He supplied me with all new blankets, bed linens, paint, brushes, brooms, etc. I called the Compartment Cleaners together and told them that we would pass this inspection or else. I brought tools from home clipped and raked (even under the barracks). Then the shocker. I found out that we were being inspected by Admiral Renfroe Turner my skipper in VPB-107. He was a passenger in the Galloping Ghost when we crashed. We were ready for the day. I brought in 8X10 photos of the Admiral and other photos of the squadron. I attached them to my clip board and stood by. Here comes all the brass, first the Admiral followed by our Leading Chief, CO and XO. They came up the walk and as I saluted Admiral Turner said "Goodell, how in the world are you and shook my hand"? We entered the barracks, took on peek in the lower head, turned around and said "Goodell, have all of your men assemble down here so I can shake their hands." My CO and the rest of the party was speechless. They had said nothing. We went outside and the Chief told him that I had done a good job on the grounds. The Admiral said you do not have to tell me anything about Goodell for I was the one that trained him. I said Sir I have some memories you may enjoy looking at. He took them and said those were the good old days. Goodell my quarters are on the base and I have many photos. Why don't you stop by and look at them. The party departed and about thirty minutes later the phone rang. It was my CO. He said Goodell, I don't know what your magic was but the squadron got the highest mark we ever had at the time.

Four planes from VP-16, Det. Alfa. were detached recently to aid in the effort to locate a VW-15 super connie that disappeared in route from Argentia to the Azores. The plane was last reported forty-five minutes out of Lajes on its round robin flight back to Argentia. On board were twenty-two passengers and crew members.

Although hampered by weather operational adversities, the rescue units were able to produce eighty-five per cent search effectiveness. A daily average of 50,000 square miles was scheduled.

A message from ADM Jerald Wright on the operation read as follows: "Please convey to all personnel concerned and to the Air Force units which participated, my personal thanks and appreciation even though the search was not successful. Shipmates and families of those missing are assured that maximum efforts were made in this humanitarian endeavor."

VP-16, Det. Alfa, received a "well done" from CDR E. B. Abrams, VP-16 Commanding Officer, now stationed in Iceland for its operations during the month of February. The siz planes of Det. Alfa, flew a total of 570.4 hours, during the past month. The detachment aided in two search and rescue missions besides it regular commitments and training flights. Both crew member and ground personnel did an outstanding job in maintaining aircraft availability. Contributed by Ray Jobes RAYJOBES@AOL.COM[29JAN2000]

The Officers and men of VP-16, Detachment ALFA, spent nine days aboard the LST "Alameda County", while deployed in the Mediterranean area for a joint NATO exercise. The shipboard life was a new experience for most of the VP-16 personnel. While on board, the men exchanged view on the "Air vs Sea" type of Navy life, and while no definite conclusions were reached most agreed tha they were content with their present respective duty assignments.

Milburn M. Voorhies, AK2, has been named the detachment "Sailor of the Month." In presenting the award, Officer In Charge, CDR J. W. Clark, pointed out that Voorhies, also a member of the squadron's bowling team, had performed his duties in the supply department in an outstanding manner. Mr Wyatt McFarland.

Dear Mr McFarland,

The Curator for the Navy forwarded your 22 January letter to my office for reply to you.

You asked for information on your SP-2E.

The distance from the ground to top of fuselange is 14' 4"; from center to center of landing gears left/right it is 25' 11"; and from center to center of main to nose landing gear is 24' 9". Weight and connecting points are items too complex to explain in a letter.

You need copies of the Flight Handbook and the Erection and Maintenance Manual for the P2V-5F, which was the aircraft's designation before being changed to P-2E.

The Air Force may have copies of these books. We have retired ours to the National Archives. I suggest that you ask at Rickenbacker.

If the Air Force does not have the books, all you can do is write the National Archives, Printed Archives Branch, 4205 Suitland Road, Washington, D.C. 20409. Ask for the books by aircraft designation.

COMRADES AND SISTERS

This is for you, not a memorial, monument, or a donation, but a piece of American Heritage from yesteryear, not so long ago but yet tucked away in the past. She was to die a death not befitting so many of her kind, to be burned, but somewhere down the road of her military career fate played a hand. Her career is above reproach, her destiny is now yours, for her final landing and resting place will be Liberty Union VFW Post 3761. Where else can American Heritage stop, be revived and begin a new career of American Heritage, but in the hands of the Veterans.

The P2V-5 first flew on 29 Dec 1950, it had a search light to illuminate the target for the nose guns. The light is housed in the nose of the starboard wing tank. The P2V-5FS (SP-2E) has a magnetic anomaly detection gear in the stinger tail, it also carried the Julie/Jezebel active and passive detection systems. The Navy updated the P2V-5 to the P2V-6 on 16 Oct 1952, this plane was built under the P2V-5 plans in 1953. She has been called "The Old Man of The Sea", but the Navy called her the "Neptune". Navy Neptune, "Truculent Turtle" set a world distance record of 11,236 miles. The Navy "Neptune" have seen service in Viet Nam.

Another thank you to all those who helped Paul with the move. I don't know if anyone kept a list of those who helped and I don't want to miss anyone, if there is a list please let the Post know and we will add it .

We have a book at the Post with letters and picture of the A/C and the move of the aircraft if you at the Post and would like to see it, please ask.

P2V Story From Don Bates 12/08/2008

On the evening of July 2, 1963 we left Jax, Fl. on a routine 10 hour flight, due east over the Atlantic Ocean, to monitor shipping in the area. We did this by checking for screw sounds, getting a fix, then honing in on the ships, clicking on the search light to get it's name and port of registry. We would chart this along with the ship's heading. About 6 hours into the flight we picked up screw sounds that were identical to a Russian conventional sub. We honed in on it to find that it was submerged. So we dropped 3 consecutive practice depth charge s, which was at the time a warning to surface and be recognized. Nothing! We did it several more times and no response. We were told by the higher-ups to stay with it till they could get another crew launched to relieve us as we were now low on fuel. We idled back as slow as we could go and still stay airborne. By the time our relief plane arrived we didn't have enough fuel to return to Jax, so we were diverted to Nassau Airport in the Bahamas to get fuel. Nassau told us to buzz the field when we got there and they would turn on the runway lights for us to land. I guess they were saving energy way back then. We had to wait till they could locate a driver for the fuel truck. We could see the truck on the other side of the fence where they parked old 522. 2 hours later, 5am, the driver showed up and was so drunk that we ended up driving the truck and fueling the plane ourselves. It ended up being a long and hungry flight, but worth it. At daybreak the Russian sub had to surface to charge his batteries, because they normally charge them at night under the cover of darkness, but we foiled that by staying with them and the other crew got some great daylight pictures.

Each aircraft had a log book that records were kept in. Inside the log book for 131522 was a newspaper clipping from Shreveport,La. that told the story about ADR2 Swain(Plane Captain) flying 131522 by himself from Burbank,Ca. to Shreveport,La. which would have been 1960 when it was scheduled to leave VWRFR Burbank to Jax, Fl. From what I can remember, the article told how the Navy was going to court-marshall him and the Airforce stated anyone who could fly that bomber that distance by himself they wanted on their team. It was quite an interesting article. I tried several years ago to find the article from the Shreveport news but they couldn't find it as I didn't have an approximate date. All I could tell them was that it was sometime late 50's early 60's. From your info we now know it was probably Sept 1960. If you have the time you might be able to research the article, explaining that it is important information needed to complete the history of your aircraft. To my knowledge it's the only Neptune to have been flown by one man. You have a piece of history there.

This is what I can tell you about special tours etc. of 131522 while I was Plane Captain. It spent 3 tours out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Cuban crisis doing reconnaissance around the Island 1962,1963,and 1964. It was on T.A.D.(temporary additional duty) out of Boca Chico Naval air station in the Florida Keys doing reconnaissance between Cuba and the Keys 1963. It went to Puerto Rico for 2 weeks every January for Maneuvers with the Atlantic Fleet to brush up on our skills while it was in VP-7. It was picked by our Commanding Officer, while we were in Rota, Spain, to be displayed in an air show at Lajes Air-Force Base in the Azores Islands. It was on T.A.D. to the Island of Crete, while in Rota, Spain, working the Mediterranean Sea. The "Skipper" picked it and our crew to take him to London, England to meet with his Executive officer, who was in charge of the other half of the squadron in Keflavik, Iceland. It wasn't that he liked "us", he only liked the way we kept the aircraft clean and and in the "up" status and that made "him" look good!

As you can see the color of the plane changed from charcoal grey to light gray between Rota in 1964 and storage 1965. It was repainted in Norfolk, Va. November 1964 and a memo followed that nothing was to applied to the paint of any aircraft but soap and water. Unknown by others, our crew had applied Johnson's one step glo-coat which helped us keep old 522 clean and shining. Don

Cruisebook

The history of Patrol Squadron Sixteen has its beginning in May of 1946. At that time a group of patriotic and Navy-minded reserve personnel were organized to form a squadron in the Naval Air Reserve Training Command. This squadron was designated VP-ML-56 and utilized six PBY's one week-end each month at Cecil Field, thereby retaining the know how tha+ these individuals had acquired during the recent great struggle. World War II. In this day of high horsepower reciprocating engines, high thrust jet engines and complicated electronics equipment, it may appear ludicrous that any semblance of combat efficiency could be maintained in such antiquated aircraft. That such was not the case is exemplified by the winning of the Noel Davis Trophy by VP-ML-56 in 1948. This trophy is awarded annually to the outstanding squadron of each type in* the Naval Air Reserve Training Command and by winning it the antecedents of Patrol Squadron Sixteen proved again that individual spirit, a desire for excellence, and good teamwork applied to proven procedures can indeed maintain a high readiness in spite of many handicaps.

A static condition has never been typical of this squadron. Shortly after winning the Noel Davis Trophy the organization of the Naval Air Reserve Training Command was .modernized and the squadron was redesignated Patrol Squadron Seven Hundred and Forty-One and it remained in the reserve status from 1949 until 1951 when the entire squadron was recalled to active duty as a result of the expansion incident to the Korean conflict. The personnel complement was increased, P2V-2 aircraft were assigned and an intensive training program was pursued to ready the squadron for the first deployment to Malta in March of 1952.

The United States had embarked upon a courageous policy of containing Communism within its current boundaries by the utilization of armed forces in many foreign lands assuring freedom loving countries that their freedoms would be protected. VP-741 fulfilled a portion of the U. S. Navy commitment in the Mediterranean in this regard and tasted the first international flavor in its operations during this deployment to Malta. Following the return of the squadron to NAS Jacksonville, Commander J. W. Hardy relieved Commander C. W. Rogers of command of VP-741 and although many of the personnel returned to inactive duty, there were many of the original members of VP-ML-56 in the ranks on 16 February, 1953, when VP-741 was commissioned a squadron of the Regular Navy and redesignated Patrol Squadron Sixteen.

More regular navy personnel were integrated into the squadron and intensified training activities culminated in a deployment to NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. VP-16 again augmented the forces protecting Freedom's boundaries and the officers and men worked with armed forces of other nations to achieve this common goal. At the completion of this cruise the squadron again returned to Jacksonville, where, in February of 1954, Commander Paul J. Bruneau assumed command.

Following intensive preparation, VP-16 was deployed to Iceland in May of 1954 and operated under the direct control of Commander Iceland Defense Force, a U. S. Air Force Command. That aircraft operations from this bleak and cold isle posed new maintenance and operating problems needs no mention. By aggressiveness and the application of good old American ingenuity all problems met were conquered and VP-16 added its name and ability to those of other squadrons who had patrolled and protected those northern boundaries.

At the conclusion of the deployment to Iceland, NAS Jacksonville again found that VP-16 was one of its tenant activities; however, there was a new look to the squadron. New P2V-5 aircraft had been received and under the capable leadership of Commander Bruneau, operating doctrines and techniques were established and perfected; those techniques proving entirely adequatein subsequent operations. Incorporated in the P2V-5 was the most modern of airborne ASW equipment which required new concepts of operations, schooling at various locations, and improved maintenance procedures.

Patrol Squadron Sixteen paused in these activities long enough to observe change of Command ceremonies in late March of 1955. Commander Paul S. Bazler relieved Commander Bruneau, and it was with heavy hearts that his many friends said, "Bon Voyage" to Commander Bruneau who look up his new post with the Military Assistance and Aid Group, England.

In July of 1955, Patrol Squadron Sixteen again said goodbye to wives and sweethearts and left the U. S. for another deployment to NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. This deployment was marked by an intensive pilot training program in order to qualify many new pilots in type, by repeated ASW exercises with national, foreign, and NATO forces, and by familiarization flights to the capitals of the free countries of Europe and the Middle East. The techniques developed and practiced in Jacksonville were put to the test many times under strange operating conditions and under the critical eye of foreign observers and were not found wanting in any respect.

On 10 December, 1955, Patrol Squadron Sixteen again took up residence at NAS Jacksonville. The squadron returned in a group, flew over the Air Station in parade formation and taxied to the line flying the traditional pennants denoting a Navy Homecoming. Wives and friends were thrilled to see the squadron return in this manner, but the thrill of the day was experienced by the members of VP-16 who were reunited with their loved ones.

The subject of this book is the last deployment to NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. That the squadron performed well is a matter of record; the following message from Admiral E. C. Ewen, the Commander, Fleet Air Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean is quoted: "During Mod Deployment Patron 16 has displayed excellent teamwork, cooperation, and initiative. Well done." Things not a matter of record were also gained during this deployment. New friendships were formed which will last a lifetime, men achieved new horizons due to their effort and thinking, greater understanding of foreign nations and compassion for those less fortunate were found, but most important, a pride in accomplishment has been experienced. A pride that within each person knows no limits, that men will not speak of but will feel deeply, that others not in VP-16 will know exists by the actions and performance of this squadron in the future.
