Yes boys, it was I who with 7 days left in this man's Navy felt the odds at the time favored bailout. After all... floating in a chute seemed preferable at the time to tryin' to ditch with #2 burnin' and 1,3&4 turnin'!! Fortunately, a newbie named of MAXWELL was sittin' in the right seat, and he said somethin' to the effect of,"Miyako Jima's around here, ain' it?" Sure enough, it was. Later, I had the honor of unloadin the "smokes,bouys,charges and anything else that we could take out, just so I could be an observer on the 3 engine ferry flight out of that diamond in the sea, back to good ol' NAHA. Robie was born August 29, 1931 in Wichita Falls, TX. He joined the Navy in 1951 and served for 20 years retiring as a Navy Chief. He served the Army for 15 years as a small arms repairman. He enjoyed bowling, muzzleloading and was an excellent pen craftsman. He attended numerous crafts shows with his wife around South Texas. He is preceded in death by his son Jamie Roberson, his parents Francis and Samuel Roberson, sister Frances Haney and nephew Kenny Whitaker. SNELLING, LCDR Bob http://www.friendsofbob.org/meet.htm "...In June of 1965, as a newly commissioned Ensign, Bob reported aboard the USS Robert K. Huntington (DD-781), a World War II vintage Destroyer, stationed at Mayport, Florida, and served there for two years as Gunnery Officer and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer with collateral responsibilities of Public Affairs and Personal Financial Affairs. The Huntington made one Mediterranean Sea deployment and several short cruises to the Caribbean during Bob's tour. Upon completing all associated flight training, he reported in 1969 to VP-28, The Hawaiian Warriors, at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, where he served as pilot and Flight Line Officer. Later in 1969, VP-28 was decommissioned so he immediately reported to VP-6, The Blue Sharks, also at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. While serving in the patrol navy he spent three short periods in Vietnam flying in Operation Market Time, an operation designed to keep supplies from arriving to help the Viet Cong in South Vietnam. While his primary responsibility was to fly as a Patrol Plane Commander in P-3, aircraft he also served VP-6 as Assistant Administrative Officer and Personnel Officer. During his time of service he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal all for service during the Vietnam war. Upon leaving active duty he joined VP-64, a reserve patrol squadron, at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Bob earned the rank of Lieutenant-Commander which he held upon resigning from the Naval Reserves in 1975. Bob joined Delta Air Lines as a pilot in 1972. He has flown as Flight Engineer, Co-pilot, and Captain on many of Delta's jets. He has spent most of his twenty-five year career flying the Boeing-727 and Lockheed's L-1011. He is currently an L-1011 Captain based in Atlanta, GA. He specialized as a flight instructor for 13 years with Delta. Most recently he taught pilots and co-pilots on the Boeing-727. We pulled maintenance on P2V-5 Neptunes assigned to VP-6, VP-22 and VP-28. I was attached temporarily to VP-28 out of NAS Kwajalein, Marshall Islands in 1958 for the last H bomb test in the Marshall islands. It was called "Operation Hartack". Our FASRON group had training aircraft to keep pilots up to snuff on instrument flying etc. We had SNB's TV-2's and two Grumman T2's to shuttle people and stuff on and of carriers. Our flight line was used for all the carrier aircraft to come to when the carriers went into Pearl, so the planes wouldn't be with the ship while docked. During my time in VP-2 I was second radioman in crew 5 with Jack O. Chapman as 1st radio and George Kirby as 3rd radio. We were in a crash on June 15th, 1951 at the end of the NAS Kodiak, Alaska GCA runway, runway 25, I believe. Mr. Sevier, our PPC was killed, Bob Houk, 2nd Mech badly injured as was our Plane Captain, whose name I can't recall. The rest of us had minor injuries and returned to crew duty, picking up a new P2V-4 at the factory. I left the Navy in 1957 after serving in VP-28, VC-35 (briefly), NAS Patuxent River, Maryland on shore duty; then in VX-6 for OPERATION DEEPFREEZE I and II. I was unable to get to AT (B) school due to the requirements of VX-6, so I left the Navy and joined the Air Force as an Airborne ECM and Radio Specialist. This lasted only 1 year and they eliminated my AFSC, and I had to retrain. I made a wise choice and selected language training in Russian the the then, Army Language School in Monterey. After assignment to the site at Misawa AB, I attended both intermediate and advanced language schools at Syracuse University. During my first tour in 1959 to 1962 at Misawa, I had the wonderful good fortune to visit with some of my former crew, including Jack Chapman at the Misawa NCO Club. I enjoyed my time with VP-2 and all of my Navy assignments, but having gotten married on my return from VP-28, I deemed it a better chance for accompanied tours in the Air Force. There is no closer knit unit, in my opinion, than a navy air squadron. Of course my time in the USAF and the training proved useful, as my final assignment was to NSA as a Russian Linguist, and upon my retirement from the AF, I came back on board as a civilian employee where I served another 20 years, retiring in 1991 as a grade 13 with 44 years federal service. I did manage to attend one VP-22 Reunion in 1986, but it is too difficult to travel now as my wife has health problems. Cheers to all of you..." [16DEC2002]
