A BIT OF HISTORY: "... NAS Trinidad, British West Indies as a VP- Base. We were there for several years. There was a VP-squadron stationed in NAS Trinidad, British West Indies all during WW-II, and when the war was over they continued to keep a squadron there until VP-34 was decommissioned sometime in 1955 (or was it '56?). As a matter of fact, NAS Trinidad, British West Indies is shown in one of the Victory At Sea Movie segments. A part of the base was an Naval Operating Base, with a dry dock and everything, then there was the part that they called the Naval Base with the admin stuff, and of course the Naval Air Station with the tower and the Seaplane hangar and ramps. Also a 1/2 hangar for the FASRON (Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron) who supported us. I am not aware of who was there during the war but VP-34 moved in to the base after VP-48 moved out and went to California...." Contributed by William R. "This is the picture of the 'White Hats' that I got from Norm Roinestad....all of the divisions got their pictures taken on this day. It was right after one of those 'Saturday Morning Inspections" that the Navy was so proud of in those days...Aimone, AO1, when last I heard about him, he was an instructor in AO school in Jax, sometime around 1958...Love, AO3, retired on thirty years as an AXC at Brunswick, Me...Arndt, Jack, AO3 killed in a plane crash returning from San Juan to NAS Trinidad, British West Indies...Mulholland, AO2 picked up for Warrant Officer...Deflippo, Carmen, AN got out at end of enlistment, returned to New Jersey...Ferguson, John AO3, commissioned. Receiving the latest information concerning the "friendly enemy" submarine they are to attack from Comdr. "Sighted sub, sank same 12 times," reported the Jacksonville based FAW-11 during its anti-submarine exercises off the Florida East Coast last week.
The dozon "kills" claimed by the wing were all on the same under-water vessel, the USS Grampus, which was working in co-ordination with the aircraft during anti-submarine practice.
Nineteen "attacks" were made on the sub and the number of "kills" made were recorded by aerial photographs made during the operations. Lt. Comdr. Eugene C. Barnhart Jr., skipper of the "friendly enemy" submarine, called the recent training exercises one of the most successful in which he has participated.
Capt. Arthur S. Born, commander of the FAW-11, reported that most effective of the four squadrons participating was VP-3 of the local air station with five successful attacks out of siz attempts.
Three kills were made by both VP-18 and NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone VP-45 with the NAS Trinidad, British West Indies VP-34 making one successful attack.
During the practice operations, the pilots and crew members rose at 2 a.m. and were briefed on the mission, last reported position of the submarine, tactics they were to employ, and weather information.
The photographs taken during the exercise are now being used to improve anti-submarine methods and techniques employed by FAW-11.
