JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NWSA) -- The Bald Eagle Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation named its top pilots and naval flight officers for 1996 during a banquet at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, Feb. 27.
Six pilots and three naval flight officers were selected from among 50 finalists from the five air wings and the Naval Air Reserve at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida and Naval Station Mayport. More than 1,000 area pilots and naval flight officers were eligible.
Winners of Pilot of the Year honors are: LT Greg C. Huffman, of Strike Fighter Squadron 83, NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida; LT Mike Ruth, of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 7, NAS Jacksonville, Florida; LT Temijuiin H. Glass, of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light 46, Naval Station Mayport; LT Gregory J. Schmeiser, of VP-16, NAS Jacksonville, Florida; LT Brian M. Sauter, of Air Antisubmarine Squadron 24, NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida; and LCDR John A. Bullock III, of Fleet Tactical Support Squadron 58, NAS Jacksonville, Florida.
Top Naval Flight Officers of the Year are: LT Sean R. Liedman, of VP-45, NAS Jacksonville, Florida; LCDR Timothy W. Summers, of Air Antisubmarine Squadron 22, NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida; and LT Guy D. Jackson, of VP-62, NAS Jacksonville, Florida.
A BIT OF HISTORY: "00AUG97--NNS3612. P-3C's new mission is Navy SEAL's newest asset by LTJG James Hollingsworth, VP-45 Public Affairs SIGONELLA, Sicily (NWSA) -- VP-45 P-3C "Orion" aircraft recently conducted a training exercise with Navy SEALs using the latest in intelligence dissemination equipment. The 6th Fleet exercise, held in the western Mediterranean, involved VP-45 aircraft, USS Tempest (PC 2) and the SEALs. Using the newly developed Air Deployable Delivery System (ADDS), the squadron passed critical surveillance information directly to the SEALs waiting in the water. ADDS makes it easier to share intelligence information for closer support of surface ships and special operations. "The success of this mission could pave the way for future assignments with Navy SEALs, providing yet another mission for the Orion," remarked LT William Freehafer, Combat Aircrew 1 mission commander. In order to ensure 100 percent accuracy in data transfer, two practice runs were conducted under daylight conditions. The actual event was performed in darkness, using lessons learned earlier in the day. A BIT OF HISTORY: "15SEP97--NNS3912. VP-45 aids in rescue off Namibia Coast -- OFF THE COAST OF NAMIBIA (NNS) -- A Navy P-3C Orion aircraft forward deployed to Sigonella, Sicily departed early Sept. 15 to assist in an ongoing search effort for one U.S. and one German aircraft reported missing Sept. 14 off the coast of Namibia, Africa. "This is why we're forward deployed", said CDR Jerry Hyde, commanding officer of Patrol Squadron forty-five (VP-45). "From Sigonella we can respond anywhere in the Mediterranean, Europe or Africa within 24-hours and the SAR mission is one we train for regularly." Approximately 20 personnel from VP-45 departed after being tasked by senior U.S. military commanders in Europe. The crew will conduct search and rescue operations from a forward staging area in Namibia, Africa, until the mission is completed. "This is the kind of mission where our training really pays off," said Aviation Systems Warfare Operation 1st Class Edward Ginder, from VP-45. "The P-3C's endurance in combination with its radar and communications suite make it the most capable SAR platform in the world ... a fact that is often overlooked." The 11-member aircrew, supported by maintenance personnel on the ground will use a variety of onboard video, photographic sensors and communications equipment to search for survivors. VP-45, known as the Pelicans, departed their home port in Jacksonville, Fla., for a six-month deployment to Naval Air Station, Sigonella, Sicily, Italy, in August. -USN-..."

A BIT OF HISTORY: "03JUL96--Headline: Building Bridges in Mutual Support "We went flying to build a bridge," said Commodore John G. Morgan Jr., Commander Destroyer Squadron Two Six (CDS-26), following a mission with the "Pelicans " of Patrol Squadron Forty-Five (VP-45). Recent operations in the Mediterranean have highlighted the benefits of mutual support between destroyers and patrol squadrons in today's naval operations. "I've always been a big fan of maritime patrol aircraft. Today, they are more important than ever in executing my responsibilities as the Sea Combat Commander (SCC) for the USS George Washington (CVN 73) Battle Group," said Commodore Morgan, of Reston, Va. The SCC is a consolidated warfare commander responsible for surface and undersea warfare, as well as maritime interception, offensive mining, and helicopter coordination. The SCC concept provides for a single warfare command authority for the apportionment of a battle group's destroyers, frigates, submarines and naval air forces, such as maritime patrol aircraft (MPA). The ability to call upon MPA expands the battle group's area of influence and provides identification of potential dangers or threats at great distances from the battle group. The endurance of MPA aircraft and its advanced systems eases the strain on the carrier air wing, and allows the air wing to focus on power protection requirements. "Maritime patrol aircraft are in major demand because they are versatile, multi-mission capable, and most importantly, they can help resolve the daunting task of identifying ships and subs in the areas of shallower water close to land commonly know as the littoral," Commodore Morgan said. "The maritime patrol aircraft of VP-45 are just what the doctor ordered for today's littoral operations. They are agile, responsive, innovative and capable of staying on station for a long time. What more could a commander want?" Under the leadership of RADM John R. Ryan, of Mt. Home, Penn., Commander Task Force Six Seven (CTF-67), operational commander for all P-3 maritime aircraft in the Mediterranean, patrol squadrons are performing a wide range of missions. Maritime aircraft's primary mission is often thought to be undersea warfare (USW), but as far back as World War II, they have done more than just USW. From ocean surveillance to over-land intelligence collection, from search and rescue to aerial mining, the maritime patrol (P-3) community is accustomed to tailoring its support to the mission at hand. These attributes were demonstrated in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and continue today. "The demands of surveillance and proper identification in the littoral regions of the world require that tactical decision makers understand completely the identification capabilities of platforms like the P-3," said LCDR Stephen W. Hampton, DESRON 26 Chief Staff Officer. "Both aviation and surface warfare team members must have confidence in each other's systems and understand system limitations," said LCDR Hampton, of Yorktown, Va. "Our flight with the professionals of VP-45 helped provide that understanding." In reciprocation, Destroyer Squadron Two Six invited representatives of VP-45 to sail with USS George Washington during Exercise Freedom 96-3, and with USS Arthur W. Radford (DD 968) for Exercise SHAREM 117. Both exercises tested the integrated concept of the sea combat warfare commander and emphasized the importance of forward deployed MPA squadrons. "Getting a glimpse of how our information is used to build a surface and sub-surface picture was totally new to me," said VP-45's LT Cory A. Bouck, of Owosso, Mich., as he stood watch in George Washington's Combat Direction Center. "My understanding of how our P-3 aircraft integrate and add to this battle group's surveillance capability is critical to our ability to provide quality, useful data to the battle group decision makers," said VP-45's LCDR Peter H. McDevitt, of Fairfield, Calif. "Cross-training with the ships and the staff of DESRON 26 during real-world operations truue benefit of our deployment." During Sixth Fleet's Exercise SHAREM 117, VP-45's LT Slate L. Johnson embarked USS Arthur W. Radford and flew with HSL-46 Detachment Seven. "We flew a mission against a simulated enemy sub," said LT Johnson, a Camp Hill, Penn., native. "It was a completely different perspective to be in the helicopter. We frequently do coordinated USW with MPA P-3s and SH-60B helos. "When I fly TACCO (tactical coordinator) in the P-3, I am often tasked as the scene-of-action commander and control the coordinated MPA-helo tactics. My helo ride helped me better understand how the other guys work." VP-45 is deployed to the Mediterranean and Commander Task Force 67 for four months. They operate mostly from NAS Sigonella, Sicily, supporting the NATO Implementation Forces in Bosnia, executing Sixth Fleet missions and exercise requirements, and supporting the deployed carrier battle group (Task Force 60). Patrol Squadron Forty-five, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is commanded by CDR Kenneth W. Deutsch, of Burlington, Ill., Destroyer Squadron Two Six is homeported in Norfolk, Va., and is currently deployed to the Mediterranean with the George Washington Battle Group...."
