HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...Patrol Squadron Four Begins 'Aloha' Deployment - Story Number: NNS160322-19 Release Date: 3/22/2016 4:03:00 PM - By L(jg) Matthew Johnston - Public Affairs Officer, VP-4..." Forwarded by LARSON, LCDR John Retired oriondriver1975@yahoo.com [14APR2016]

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII (NNS) -- P-3C Orion planes from Patrol Squadron (VP) Four, departed Kaneohe from Marine Corps Base Hawaii for the last time, March 18. The Skinny Dragons of VP-4 began a challenging tri-site deployment to three different areas of responsibility (AORs).

The theme, 'Aloha Deployment,' was adopted by VP-4 and its meaning is two-fold. VP-4 says Aloha and Mahalo to their Hawaii home and will be saying Aloha to the P-3C in favor of the P-8A Poseidon.br>
Since 1964, VP-4 has a long and decorated history as a permanent fixture in Hawaii, so leaving is certainly bittersweet.

Upon return from deployment, VP-4 will execute a permanent duty station change to Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, Washington, and transition to the P-8A. The Skinny Dragons began flying the Orion 50 years ago, and the transition to the Poseidon is the next step in ensuring they remain the Navy's premier maritime squadron.

"This deployment is an exciting time for our squadron and our families," said VP-4 Commanding Officer Cdr. Jon Spore. "Between the move to Whidbey Island and the upcoming transition to the P-8A Poseidon, we have a lot to look forward to, but remain focused on our immediate goal of completing our last P-3C Orion deployment. That being said, our time in Hawaii was very special and we look forward to making new memories in a new location and with a new aircraft."

Patrol Squadron Four is the first of three Hawaii-based squadrons to make the move to Whidbey Island and transition to the P-8A, and they will continue their standard of excellence in the new aircraft. The Skinny Dragons are motivated to face that challenge, however, their focus is currently on the deployment and executing the mission.

"VP-4 has enjoyed great success for many years in Hawaii. Our Sailors from today and years gone by have fantastic memories of serving in the Aloha State," remarked VP-4 Executive Officer Cdr. Christopher Smith. "While it's bittersweet to leave, we look forward to starting our next chapter in our new home after this deployment. We fondly say Mahalo to this wonderful community for all the great memories."

After flying the P-3 for 50 years, the Skinny Dragons are committed to ensuring this last Orion 'Aloha Deployment' is a resounding success that sees them all return home safely.

HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...Patrol Squadron 4 defeats Installation Personnel Administration Center in close game, 30-28 By Lance Cpl. Suzanna Knotts | Marine Corps Base Hawaii | August 09, 2013 - Marine Corps Base Hawaii..." WebSite: Marine Corps Base Hawaii http://www.mcbhawaii.marines.mil/ [15DEC2013]

Patrol Squadron 4 won the 101 Days of Summer Flag Football Tournament by defeating Installation Personnel Administration Center in a close championship game at Pollock Field Aug. 5, 30-28.

The game could have gone to either team as VP-4 and IPAC were neck and neck throughout the night. The battle added to the suspense of the significant championship game.

The game was an intense two halves, and points racked up quickly as the night wore on. The game was tied early, 6-6 in the beginning of the first half. Both teams struggled with incomplete passes, but the defensive performances on each team were solid, making the game extremely competitive with pulled flags and many passionate words.

Maleek Ferguson, corner and safety for the IPAC team, said the close game was heated.

The whole game had a good, up tempo, Ferguson said. It just came down to the last teams possession taking the game, which was VP-4.

With two minutes left in the first half, IPACs quarterback threw two incomplete passes in the end zone. During VP-4s possession, the quarterback threw a Hail Mary pass on third down, which resulted in a touchdown. However, the two-point conversion was unsuccessful since the IPAC defense pulled the VP-4 players flag, ending the first half with the score 12-8.

The IPAC teams beginning possession of the second half looked promising with successful plays down the field, alternating running and throwing the ball. Their quarterback ran the ball in for a touchdown, bringing his team in the lead, 16-12.

The squadrons quarterback answered with a throw the length of the football field and his receiver caught the ball in the red zone. Their next play was a touchdown, 18-16, reclaiming the lead. With seven minutes left in the game, IPAC brought the score to 22-18, but VP-4 denied the two-point conversion. VP-4s quarterback ran the ball on third down and got his flag taken.

IPAC then brought the game to 28-24 with approximately one minute left in the game, and the heat turned up. Flags flew and the competitive spirits were at an all-time high. A VP-4 player ran out of bounds after a complete pass to stop the clock at 38 seconds. The VP-4 team called their last time out after an IPAC player slapped the ball in the air, denying a possession.

However, VP-4 completed its last play for a touchdown at the last second. The touchdown was controversial because IPAC players believed the runners flag was taken. The referees didnt agree and called the game 30-28, with VP-4 winning the championship.

Ferguson said regardless of his teams loss he was happy with their overall performance since most of them played injured.

We played well, Ferguson said. We just need a little more practice. Im definitely not ashamed of this loss. If we just work on team chemistry, we will be unstoppable.

MISAWA, Japan (NNS) -- Patrol Squadron (VP) 4 departed Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan, March 30, after completing their mission in support of Operation Tomodachi.

VP-4 will return to Kadena Air Base, Japan, where they are currently on a six-month deployment from Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The squadron arrived March 12 to assist after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated northeast Japan.

"We were supporting the search-and-rescue operations and providing real time data on the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami," said Lt. j.g. Hector Robles, a navigator-communicator with VP-4. "We surveyed the area and provided images and video to the USS Essex (LHD 2) and USS Ronald Regan (CVN 76)."

While assigned to NAF Misawa, two VP-4 aircraft flew 17 sorties, surveying various locations in the northeast coast of Japan. The four-propeller P-3C Orion had varying flight times, with some missions as short as three hours.

"The flight times vary," said Robles, a native of Fajardo, Puerto Rico. "Some missions can keep a plane on station for up to ten hours."

While the aircrafts were not performing their traditional role while in Misawa, Robles said he was proud of the work he and his crewmates performed on a daily basis.

"We are normally a tactical aircraft," said Robles about the P-3C's intended mission. "But when you do missions like these to assist people, it feels very rewarding."

On March 22, Patrol Squadron 4 (VP-4) conducted an 8-hour field survey of ports in northern Japan, according to a feature on the Navy website. The squadron took off from Naval Air Facility Misawa (NAFM). They are gathering information regarding the status of ports, roads and infrastructure in earthquake- and tsunami-stricken cities along the eastern coastline of Japan.

The communication and real-time capabilities of the P-3 squadron will provide the Navy with more knowledge as to where they will be able to give humanitarian and relief assistance, in support of Operation Tomodachi. The 8-hour flight missions are an effort to increase the effectiveness of the squadron, as they are able to utilize sunlight to gather better on-site imagery.

Lt. Peter Kennedy, patrol plane commander for Patrol Squadron 4, shared: I think the mission has been going very well As a P-3 Squadron we are able to adapt on short notice which has made our efforts here so successful. We are receiving great support from Commander, Task Force 72 staff and overall our team is providing a very good product.

The squadron, which was based in Hawaii, moved from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, to NAFM. The move reduced the squadrons transit time, and increased their time on-site, something that proved to be advantageous to the squadron, as shared by Lt. J.G. Hector Robles. Robles said: While we had success flying out of Kadena, the location we are in today provides us with greater time on site The work we have been doing here is very rewarding.

NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan Patrol Squadron 4 took to the air from Naval Air Facility Misawa March 22, to conduct an eight-hour field survey of ports in northern Japan.

Since their reposition to NAFM on March 16, the squadron is continuing its relief efforts by gathering information on the current status of ports, roads and infrastructure in cities along the eastern coastline that were affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami.

With the P-3 squadrons communication and real-time capabilities, the Navy will gain more knowledge of where it can provide vital humanitarian and relief support in Operation Tomodachi.

"I think the mission has been going very well," said Lt. Peter Kennedy, a Klamath Falls, Ore., native who serves as a patrol plane commander assigned to Patrol Squadron 4. "As a P-3 Squadron we are able to adapt on short notice which has made our efforts here so successful. We are receiving great support from Commander, Task Force 72 staff and overall our team is providing a very good product."

The Hawaii-based squadrons move to NAFM from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, has increased the squadrons time on site and reduced their time in transit.

According to Lt. j.g. Hector Robles, assigned to VP-4 and originally from Fajardo, Puerto Rico, the move has been a big plus for them.

"While we had success flying out of Kadena, the location we are in today provides us with greater time on site," he said. "The work we have been doing here is very rewarding."

Another effort to increase their effectiveness is by conducting eight-hour flight missions from NAFM. This way the Squadron takes advantage of sunlight so they can gather better imagery on site.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeff Graham, naval air crewman (operational level), assigned to VP-4 and a native of Bakersfield, Calif., operates the Advanced Imagining Multi-spectrum Sensor aboard the aircraft. The sensor, located on the nose of the aircraft, takes detailed imagery and has streaming video capabilities.

Graham said some of the images he has seen have been hard to believe. However, he is confident that with help from the U.S. and the determination of the Japanese people, the "Land of the Rising Sun" will recover from the disaster.

"It will take a while," he said. "I do think the more resources and information that is provided to the Japanese people will help things continue to get better for the country."
