VP CrewCREWs: VP-4 Crew ThumbnailCameraVP-4 Crew 4 "...VP-4, Crew 4, on the occasion of putting five Soviet Submarine silhouettes on the nose of the airplane. We did so because of a series of ASW missions we flew out of Barbers Point in 1972/73 (can't remember for sure). The squadrons at Moffett Field had just gotten the P-3C and were having problems with their computers. They would arrive onsta in their brand new P-3C's (in the Yankee box between Hawaii & California), receive a hot swap from a Hawaii (P-3A/B) aircraft, then proceed to bomb their computer and lose contact. The Hawaii aircraft would be left with a no-contact turnover & have to generate contact again just to turnover to Moffett crews again (to most likely lose contact again). My crew had a series of five flights where we generated CPA contact from a no-contact turnover from the previous (Moffett) event. The Hawaii PATWING Commodore at the time (I believe it was RADM Ainsworth) was very pleased with the performance of VP-4 during this period (VP-4 had the ready cycle at the time) because he was in 'competition' with the Admiral in Moffett. In fact, after one of our missions where we generated CPA contact from 7 CZ's out (starting with no-contact, a feat that may still be unsurpassed by any other VP crew), he gave several of my crew medals. (He also came into the ASWOC at zero-dark-thirty that night to meet our crew when we returned from that event.) I got a NAM for that flight. Anyway, we were feeling pretty cocky and attached five Soviet Yankee silhouettes to YD-4 in commemoration of the event.
