  "...ALLEN, Gary Don (VP-4, VP-7 and VP-30) - Gary Don Allen, 74, of Brentwood, TN, passed away Feb. 28, 2012, in Tennessee State Veterans Home, Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Columbus, son of the late Don and Helen (Rotroff) Allen. His sister Karen Fastnaught, of Toledo, survives. Also surviving, his spouse Linda Mashburn Allen, of Brentwood. Gary was a member of Franklin First United Methodist Church, Franklin, Tenn., and past member of First Christian Church of Sandusky. He graduated from Findlay High School and attended John Carroll University in Cleveland and Findlay College in Findlay, Ohio. While living in Ohio, he belonged to many community clubs, including the Sandusky Yacht Club, Toastmasters, Power Squadron, and American Legion. Gary worked for Chef's Pantry and then for Stein, Inc. for many years as the director of Human Resources. He owned the photography studio "Images Unlimited" photographing weddings and portraits. Gary was proud to serve his country in the Army Reserves and then in the Navy. He was presented with a medal and citation from the U.S. Navy for meritorious achievement as an air crewman of a P-3 patrol aircraft during a special reconnaissance mission off the coast of South Korea for directly detecting and subsequent destruction of an enemy infiltrator surface craft. His efforts were instrumental in bringing his damaged aircraft safely to a landing at a friendly base. His skillful airmanship, courage and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He was authorized to wear the combat "V". During his career he was presented with several other medals and citations. Gary served in various U.S. Navy Patrol Squadrons including: VP-30, VP-7 and VP-4. He was involved during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and as an air crewman aboard a VP-7 P2V Neptune aircraft assigned to aerial surveillance of Russian ships in route to the island of Cuba carrying missiles. One of the photos he took from aboard a VP-7 aircraft was the one shown during President Kennedy's news conference on national TV during his announcement of the Cuban Blockade. Gary was an amateur radio operator (HAM) with the call sign of KB8APU. He enjoyed his experiences operating from various locations. He worked with operators near home base locations to provide members of his squadron with the ability to contact their families via radio from the squadron's deployed locations. His operating included operations while aboard naval aircraft. He was not able to utilize his amateur radio hobby during the last few years as he would have liked to. The children with whom Gary shared his life and loved all survive him. They are Deb (Bob) Redmond, of Port Clinton, Don Allen, of Sandusky, and Dawn (Allan) Peterson, of Fremont, whose mother Sarah Crawfis Hartley, survives. Kim Fredrick, of Castalia, and Chuck (Lisa Rutger) from Vermilion, whose mother Viola Sommers Allen, preceded him in death and whose father Chuck Rutger survives. Christy Kaser-Geiger, of Franklin, whose mother Linda Mashburn Allen and father the Rev. Larry J. Kaser survive. Gary loved his grandchildren, all of whom survive. They are Greg Allen, of Toledo, Bryce and Breanne Fredrick, of Castalia, Andrea, Bethany, and Laura Rutger, of Vermilion, Noah, Evan, Corinne and Nathan Geiger, of Springhill, Tenn., and Brook and Brandi Peterson, of Fremont. He also loved his great-grandchildren, all of whom survive. They are Zack and Trenton Peterson, of Fremont. One nephew, Jeff Fastnaught, of Toledo, survives. One niece Chris Fastnaught is deceased. A memorial service facilitated by Woodfin Funeral Chapel and Ransom Funeral Home will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at First Christian Church on Hayes Avenue, Sandusky, with the Rev. Don Linn officiating. Burial will be at the Margaretta Township, Castalia Cemetery on Bardwell Road in Castalia, immediately following the memorial service. A time for visitation with the family at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall will be after the graveside service. Donations to your church or favorite charity are suggested by the family. A Special thank you is given to the administration, doctors, and staff of the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro, for making the last year of Gary's life as enjoyable as possible. I remember those rocket runs off Block Island near NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and the sonobuoy sub hunts in the Atlantic. Our deployment to NAS Iwakuni, Japan was a real operational challenge to us. Patrols to Port Arthur to survey shipping to the North, sub hunts in the Yelow Sea, patrols along the Korean coast as far as Vladivostok, and cover for Task force 77.7 during replenishment, searching for displaced North Korean and Chinese troops from their POW camps in the south that were turned loose by Singman Rhee. Flew every fourth day or nite. Being 19 yrs old at the time was pretty excitying duty. We lost two planes: one ditched just south of Korea and all but one crew member was saved. Lt. Commander Essex didn't make it. Sad. Also our hanger queen slammed into a mountain in a landing attempt at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii on the way home to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. BUE, AECS Victor L. Retired victorlb@centrytel.net "...Attended AE-A School in NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee from 1949-1950 and VP-7 NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island from 1950-1954. We shared the electric shop with VP-8 (our sister squadron). VP-8 had two electricians named Chief Ohm and AE1 Watts! Transferred to the NAIRDEV Unit at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts from 1954-1956. Our CO CDR Hart had also been my CO at VP-7. I worked on his Model A car several times. Reported to VW-15 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from 1956-1959. Flew on the barrier flights out of NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada (those were some hairy flights). I was then assigned to NATTC NAS Jacksonville, Florida for AE-A school instructor duty from 1959-1963. Looking back, I enjoyed this tour of duty. Transferred back to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to Project Magnetic (VXN-8) from 1963-1967. As far as I can tell, our three aircraft were the only aircraft in the Navy to have "nose art". The two Super Connies had the "Road Runner" and "El Coyote", the R5D had a "Kiwi bird". Was a great outfit if you wanted to flew around the world. Transferred to VT-4 after making AECS in latter part of 1966. I served with VT-4 from 1967-1968. Reported to VA-86 aboard CVA-66 USS America on patrol in the Tonkin Gulf from 1968-1969. Some of our squadron pilots perform spotter duty for the battleship, I believe the New Jersey, during off shore shelling. Returned to the NAS Norfolk, Virginia after stops in Sidney Australia, Wellington NZ, and Rio Brazil. What a way to spend over 20 years in the Navy. I was a technical writer at LTV A7 aicraft test equipment from 1969-1978. I went to work as technical writer at General Dynamics Fort Worth, TX. from 1978-1993. Wrote electrical maintenance manuals on F-16, F-111, (Navy's A-12, cancelled 1991), F-22. Lockheed acquired Fort Worth General Dynamics Division in spring of 1993. I retired from Lockheed in November 1993. I have had a great time, would love to back up and do it all over again. If any of you out there remmeber me, give me call on the ole net..." They come to be turned into slurey planes (fire fighting tankers). We have 3 that stay here all the time for are fires. They take off the jets and the mad tail, gut the inside, paint and you got a cheep, fire fighten, slurey, chemical droopin tanker. I was looking over one that just came in and their bigger than they used to be !!!!!!!!!!! They still fly into mountains !!!!!!! Lot of guys I would like to check up on. We mainly serviced VP-7 and VP-8 occupying Seaplane Hangar 3. Did my share of ramp and hangar watches in the cold, cold weather. Almost froze this southerner to death. Really did enjoy making AO 3, then my watches were in the Duty Office, delivering coffee to the others freezing on the outside watches. Got lucky in Feb. '53 and was sent TAD NS Roosevelt Roads, PR for Opeation Springboard, supporting VP-7 and VP-8. I remember an AO Miller, stating that he almost turned white in an aborted landing there. I was out near the landing strip. I didn't think they were going to get back up before the props hit the deck, really close call. We were redesignated as VPHL-9 and we flew our planes to NAS Agana, Guam and turned them over to VPHL-2. The squadron then went back to the States to Miramar, California and we were the first squadron to get P2V2's. I was a crew member in 39326 and the sqyadron was designated VPML-7. After receiving all our aircraft from Lockheed, we relocated to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. It was then redesignated VP-7. Coming off the USS Midway CVA 41 it was quite the experience for the both of us to have shore duty. We both were Commissarymen, Paul worked in the galley and I worked in the inflight kitchen when we were in Japan. After coming back to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island I was in the parachuse loft for a while. Later on I ran the coffee and donuts for the crew in the hangar. Some how the base found out that I was a commissaryman so it was back to the base bakery for me. Paul was already working there. We both enjoyed working there it was a lot easier there than the ship. We both were honorable discharged in January 1956. That ended our career of serving together from boot camp, USS Midway and VP-7..." [05MAY2010]

It was my second assignment as I went through boot camp in Deigo and was assigned to th NAS Photo Lab. Six months later I made a swap for VP-12. My first job was on the ramp driving the gas truck. I filled planes for some time until one day I failed to secure the gas filler hoses and it came out of the truck as I drove down the ramp. The Admiral came out of his office and chased me down the ramp. That was my last day on the gas truck. I was 6ft. 3in so I got in the beach crew as a side mounter. I put on beaching gear for some time and then made night check. Sy Sellers was Leading Chief, Buck Tuft (sic) was Metal Smith Chief, Elmer Parker was AMM2, L. L. Davis was an AP and Stinky Davis was a mechanic. I was sent to NAS Jacksonville, Florida for A school, about Jul 1940 just as the Squadron was deploying to Pearl. We had installed the rubber bullet proof tanks and some of the planes had to be fueled at sea as they didn't make it. I spent a lot of time in VP's, VP-7, VP-21 and retired from the Navy while in VP-44. Also VJ62 and ten years in air wings. I also taught at the Aviation Maintenance Officer School. My Navy training was real great and I went into NASA after retirement and was in the early Project Mercury Group. Put Al Shepard, John Glen and Scott Carpenter in their Capsules. She told me he had been hospitalized for about four weeks after undergoing a triple heart bypass. Apparently his lungs were not strong enough to allow him to recover from the effects of this invasive surgery. I joined VP-5 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida in late 1954 or early 1955. While in VP-5, I became a Plane Captain trained by AD1 Goss who also pushed me to qualify for CAC wings. I was AD3 at the time. From there I went to NAS Kingsville, Texas and from there to VP-23 at NAS Brunswick, Maine. I took my discharge in 1961 at NAS Brunswick, Maine and traveled to Birmingham where I re-enlisted and joined VP-5 again. I was in VP-5 in NS Rota, Spain on split deployment when we lost crew 3 in Iceland in 1962 (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends...12JAN62). From there I went to NAS Key West, Florida for shore duty and then back to NAS Jacksonville, Florida and VP-7 and I think that was 1966. I left VP-7 in 1969 and went back to NAS Key West, Florida on CAG 50 staff. When the CAG was scheduled to deploy I had a retirement date so I was transfered to VX-1 in NAS Key West, Florida where I retired as ADRC in 1971.
