"...HEALY, Captain Charles Edward...Captain Charles Edward Healy, USN (retired): Dec. 16, 1914 - Aug. 12, 2003 - Captain Charles Edward Healy, USN (retired) died Aug. 12, in Coronado at the age of 88. He was born December 16,1914, in St. Paul, Minn. The son of James H. Healy and Lucy Miller Healy, he moved with his family to Mahtomedi, on White Bear Lake, Minn. He enjoyed a wonderful boyhood of swimming and sailing in the summer and ice skating, ice boating and ice fishing in the winter. He was proud of being part of his high school league championship hockey team. At the age of 18, in 1932, his father bought a ride in an airplane for him at a cost of $12.50. Taking off in winter from the frozen lake was to change the course of his life. He began studies with his brother, Jim, at St. Thomas College, in St. Paul, and majored in economics. He soon realized this was not his calling and transferred to the University of Minnesota, and earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1943. In 1938 he completed the Naval Aviation Flight Training Program in NAS Pensacola, Florida. His first assignment was VP-4 at the NAS Pearl Harbor, Hawaii flying PBY-3 Catalina Flying Boats. During this first tour of duty he met his future wife, Jean Fick. They were married in May of 1940 at Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu. In October 1941 he was transferred to a new squadron, VP-91, forming at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. He shipped out to MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where he conducted operations in the Hawaiian area and provided support for the Battle of Midway. In the fall of 1942 he returned to the mainland where he was assigned to NAS Lake City, Florida as an instructor in PV-2's. In 1944 he formed Antisubmarine Training Units in Hawaii, San Diego, NAS Alameda, California and NAS Seattle, Washington. Following World War II he served aboard the USS Cape Gloucester transferring aircraft and as commanding officer for decommissioning in Puget Sound, Washington. He conducted antisubmarine warfare operations from the USS Bairoko and the USS Bataan. He served as executive officer at NAF Litchfield Park, Ariz. In 1956 he served aboard the USS Badoeng Strait, participating in the atomic bomb testing during Operation Redwing at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. In 1957 he took command of the ship for decommissioning in Bremerton, Washington. He served aboard the USS Tarawa and the USS Lake Champlain in the Atlantic before going to the Bureau of Naval Weapons in Washington DC as Director of Antisubmarine Warfare programs in 1959. He commanded the USS Sirius for two tours in the Pacific and in 1962 was awarded the Battle Efficiency Award. He took command of the USS Bennington in 1962, overseeing its overhaul in Bremerton, Washington, and conducting antisubmarine warfare and amphibious exercises in the Pacific and Alaskan waters. The USS Bennington was the first aircraft carrier to visit Juneau, Alaska, proceeding through the Inland Passage and won the covetedaward for the number one outstanding general for ASW aircraft carriers in the Pacific Fleet. In 1963-64 he served as Chief-of-Staff to Commander Carrier Group 17 aboard the USS Hornet, touring the Far East and conducting antisubmarine warfare exercises. In 1964 he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington DC and, while there, earned a masters degree in business administration from George Washington University. His final tour of duty was as commodore, Commander Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range and Commander Fleet Air Caribbean at Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station in Puerto Rico. In 1967, after 30 years of service, he retired from the Navy. He then worked as a marketing consultant for various corporations, including General Dynamics Electronics Division he worked on the development of the Under Water Test Range, "AUTEC," in the Bahamas. He joined Dynachange Corporation as head of leasing operations; EDMAC Corporation as customer relations manager in Washington, D.C. and assisted in the award to the company for the ARR-75 ASW sonobouy receiver and other equipment. Moving back to Coronado, he and his wife Jean, founded Iberian West a retail import and interior design business in 1974 in La Jolla. Later in 1978 he rejoined EDMAC Corporation as western regional manager. In 1986, he settled down to retired life in Coronado. Awards include the Navy Commendation Ribbon, the Mexican Air Force command pilot wings, and various theater ribbons. A chair has been designated in his honor at the Naval Undersea Warfare Museum in Keyport, Wash. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Navy League and the Retired Naval Officers Association. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine (Jean) Healy, three daughters, Linda Miller of Grayslake, Ill., Anne Field of Atwater, and Lucy Jackson and her husband, Tom, of San Diego, one sister, Hope Koontz of San Diego, and seven grandchildren.
