MISHAPs: 16 JUN 42 A/C: PBY-5A Location: NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada Strike: Yes BUNO: 02954 Cause: Convoy coverage - Upon take-off pilot's view was obstructed by rise and drop off in runway. A contractors tractor dumper cross diagonally from right to left across path of plane. Upon seeing a collision was imminent, pilot applied full power in an attempt to hurdle the dumper, meanwhile bearing to the left. The right wheel struck the "goose neck" connection of dumper and tractor and tore a hole in the bottom. Pilot succeeded in completing take-off, raising the other wheel and after a one hour and forty-five minute flight, landed in the water in a position to beach the plane. Major damage: Right wheel torn off, large hole right side at chine and above. Right wheel, tire and struts damage beyond repair. Crew Ok: Pilot Chief Mach. Frank J. The entire accessory section with all lines and cables were severely burned indicating the fire had burned for sometime before it was noticed.
