A BIT OF HISTORY: "...18AUG37---The USS Gannet departed San Diego 18 August 1937 and based at NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone, as tender for aircraft squadrons of the Scouting Force until 1 June 1939. Arriving NAS Norfolk, Virginia 9 June, she then became tender to CPW-5, Aircraft Scouting Force. In a series of cruises from Norfolk, she tended Navy patrol planes based at Key West, NAS Bermuda, Santa Lucia, and NAS Trinidad, British West Indies, then steamed north 22 September 1941 to establish an advance seaplane base at Rungnait Bay, Greenland (6-23 October). USS Langley completed conversion 26 February 1937 and was reclassified AV-3 on 11 April she was assigned to Aircraft Scouting Force and commenced her tending operations out of Seattle, Sitka, Pearl Harbor, and San Diego.
