ALLRED, CTTCM (NAC) Mike Retired MDALLRED@AOL.COM "...I was a VQ-2 sailor from May 74 to Dec 78. Spent many, many hours at Bennie's and lots of days TAD to Athens on ground det. Oh for the days of Bobby's Bar. Left the Q and went to VPU-2 Old Buzzards as their first CTT on staff. Great tour as a real airdale. Lots of good dets to places better left unmentioned. Working for Don East and Ivan Hughes was some of the best ever. Left NAS Brunswick, Maine in 82 and went back to the Q in NS Rota, Spain. I guess I was a real glutton for punishment but I got to work for the Buzzard again so it was worth it. Especially when he pinned on my anchors in 82. Left the Q community for good in 85 and did lots of other fun CT stuff and finally retired in July 95 as CMC at Naval Security Station Washington DC. Currently a full-time college student hoping to graduate in Dec98 with a degree in Natural Science and teach General Science. Hi to all my old Shipmates, (and I do mean old). Hope to hear from some of you. Stay Navy!!!..." [03MAY98]

Started out with VP-17 from 1975 to 1978, PMTC NAS Point Mugu, California from 1978 to 1981, and VP-4 Detachment Special Projects from 1981 to 1988 (that's what VPU-2 was called before establishment). That's right Boys and Girls - 8 years. If you haven't figured it out - I am a Plankholder. I finished my career at the Executive Transport Department NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii from 1988 to 1994. I would have to say that the best tour I had was with VPU-2. It was the first command that i was able to truely reach my potential. I was on Crew 12, The Whipped Dogs, for 7 years and don't remember any bad crew members or Detachments (even the 3 months I spent in Masirah). VPU-2 made you feel like you were really contributing something important. Last thought - Jack Lyons and Mike Griffen if you see this E-Mail me. It would be great to hear from you. Aloha..." CONDELLA, Phil Condella pcondella@hotmail.com "...Nice to see many familiar names and places, truly the VP community was a great experience. The community seemed to attract excellent people in all department and divisions. Of course, AdubaU's were the best (in our own minds) until the FE had us fuel the A/C or do plugs/covers during the most crappy weather to put us in our place…..as for me I spent all my operational time on the west coast/west-pac other than a few training TAD's on the east coast. So I've pretty much seen everything from the western U.S to Africa. Served in VP-1, NATTC, CV-64 (great people, but no per-diem…a VP'ers worst nightmare), VPU-2 (definitely the best tour one could hope for…great people and work…plus plenty of per-diem), NAVSTAD, and then early retirement under the TERA program in 1995…..went back to college and got an MBA and I'm now the Assistant Head of Procurement for the Naval Medical Center San Diego..." Worked as an AE ground pounder during that time with Ace, Dawn, Dan, Crites' (both of them), and Stelzig. Usually deployed with Crew 12 but hit all crews, but none could rank up there with the Whipped Dogs. Would like to hear from a lot of you, and been trying to get a hold of most of you. I have set up a Forum (http://www.chatarea.com/VPU2Forums) that former VPU-22er's can go and get in touch with one another and maybe plan a get-together or Reunion. ELLIOTT, Marc A. melliott@fccj.org "...I was attached to VPU-2 before it was called anything other than just Special Projects, VP-4, Association of Old Buzzards and eventually VPU-2. I was one of two maintenance techs in the airframes /corrosion shop. I worked for AMSC Ggonzales. I was an AMS2 at the time. Projects was by far the best command I was attached to while serving on active duty. From 1979 to 1982 we had a one room space that encompassed all the shops. It was a very tight knit group of guys. I will never forget all the fun and adventures experienced during that short three years. My decision to retire from the Navy was guaranteed after my tour. Hope to heart from others who may remember me..." [26MAR2000]

ENSTROM, T1(NAC) Robert renstrom@juno.com "...Previously served with VP-6 Blue Sharks - 1/90 to 3/93 and VPU-2 Wizards - 3/93 to 4/96. Presently a part of Executive Transport Department/Detatchment recently relocated to MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii from NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. Eight days from now on 01 July 99, NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii will close. I feel sad to lose her with all the potential she still has as a VP base. BRAC, just like a woman, is one of those things you can't figure out logically. We are trading a perfectly suitable climate and location for a base that just doesn't measure up to the P-3 community needs. We're giving up 3 runways for one. At least the bounce pattern is more interesting! The only concilations I have are that Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii is located in one of the most scenic parts of the island and that it was once a VP post. Most of the sailors I discuss this with agree, but we will all adopt the Marine attitude to "Adapt and Overcome" and contine to make history in the best way we can. Fair Winds to all!..." [24JUN99]

MENSEN, ADCS Scott Retired Shipmate Pix Circa 2001 porsche413@aol.com "...I joined the Naval Air Reserves in Dec 1972 on the delayed entry program. Just two weeks out of high school and after a short Reserve boot camp in NAS Memphis, Tennessee. I completed T-56 "I" level repair training and was sent to AIMD NS Rota, Spain where I spent two years in the shop as well as at the jet test cell (and 6 mos in the crash crew), while in NS Rota, Spain I completed training for a Private Pilots License and flew all over southern Spain in the flying club's two Cherokees, 150's and the T-34. It was a great time for a young teenager living off base and touring around Spain. I spent many a weekend in Torremolinos, or at the various Ferias. I joined the Navy with the desire to fly and when my time was up in Spain I was given orders to Second Mech training at VP-31 NAS Moffett Field, California and then across the runways to VP-46 where I deployed to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan in 1976 ( back to ‘31 for FE trng.) and later NAS Misawa, Japan in 1979, both great deployments with a lot of flying and a lot of traveling to other countries, P.I., Thailand, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong , Australia, Indonesia, and many more. In 1980 I moved to the other coast with VP-24 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida and low and behold my next deployment took me back to the Pacific with the first 2 + months of the NAS Bermuda deployment in NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan and various points in that AOR. In 1982 I moved across the street to VP-30 as an FE Instructor doing Alt NATOPS and Fleet IUT. I missed WestPac though and in '85 transferred to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii and to VP-6, my first deployment there in '86 to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines, the pinnacle of deployments especially since I had become a CPO by that time. You can't top being a CPO in Cubi!! The next VP-6 deployment was to NAS Adak, Alaska and that was obviously the payback for a great NAS Cubi Point, Philippines deployment, it sucked really bad and the only good thing was the dets to Elmendorf for training flights, Chillkoots is da bomb!! In '88 I got my wish to go to Special Projects (VPU-2) and that is the best place to be as an FE! I spent the next 5 years there and felt like I was stationed in NAS Misawa, Japan and made frequent dets to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. We spent Christmas and New Years in NSA Bahrain during the Gulf war in 90/91. In '93 I left Hawaii for NAS Jacksonville, Florida again, this time in VP-30 as the FE Airlant Evaluator and then with the decommissioning of VP-31 we became the Fleet NATOPS Evaluation team, It was a great job and I really met a lot of people but I missed WestPac so at the end of the tour in NAS Jacksonville, Florida I moved back to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii and VPU-2. Shortly after checking in I found myself at Entebbe, Uganda during the Ruwandan refugee crisis, followed the next year with a NAS Sigonella, Sicily det flying over Bosnia and then a year and a half later in NAS Sigonella, Sicily again for Kosovo, this time with the whole squadron! In between were many dets to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan and NSA Bahrain and a lot of Utaphao Thailand stopovers. In Oct. 2000 I completed my last det and in May 2001 I flew my last P-3 flight which put me at 25 years to the day and 14,050 flight hours, and 28 years of Naval Service. During my terminal leave I accepted a position with Hawaiian Airlines in the pilot training department as a DC-10 ground school instructor. In late 2002 we transitioned to the B-767 and taught all of the various pilot ground school classes on that aircraft. In 2007 I moved to the Safety department at Hawaiian as a Flight Safety Analyst for which I manage the Flight Operations Quality Assurance Program (FOQA) and the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP). My wife and I are still living in Kapolei, Hawaii. Any old squadron mates please drop me an email, I love to hear from old friends. Mahalo..." I went on to NAS Miramar, California and went to work at AIMD Power Plants, as ADAA and worked on TF-30's, J79's, J-52's, and eventually was a AD2 night check test cell Sup. 1987 I got out of the Navy after my 4 years. That was a mistake as I went right back in 6 months later. I went to NAS Pensacola, Florida to Aircrew training and then off to NAS Millington, Tennessee to AW "A" School. 1988 now a AW-2 after completion I was off to NAS Jacksonville, Florida for more in depth training, 1989 I went to NAS Moffett Field, California to VP-47 my favorite tour and first taste of a deployment was NAS Adak, Alaska what a dissapointment. 1990 my next deployment was a crew rotation to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan also going to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines what a experience!!. 1991 I was a AW1 and now worked in Operation's at home but did a split tour between NAF Misawa, Japan and NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan and again to vist many places NAS Cubi Point, Philippines, It was due to close and this was a sad fact my last flight over NAS Cubi Point, Philippines our AFCM actually cried. 1993 I was now off to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii to FASOTRAGRUPACDET HI as a FASO AW Instructor a nice laid back enjoyable tour, Can't beat Hawaii for a duty station. 1996 I stayed in Hawaii and down the road to the hangar VPU-2, this tour was my most fustrating tour as a AW although we did go to many places some hot some cold I'm sure you have seen coverage on CNN. I worked in Operation's again! It was a good ground job untill a certin NFO LCDR phycio took over and I went to A/C Training as a Aircrew Instructor. I left NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii and went to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington to Naval Ocean Processing Facility (NOPF) for short, my worst possible tour ever, Weather is well crappy most off the time, and the job at NOPF is mind numbing. DEC 2003 I retired and had a illness that placed me on TDRL for 5 years or untill I get better or if is resolved or other. I say Hello to all I have served a most import the ones I flew with and shared a lot of good and difficult times with. I didn't say how many flight hours I had but was just short of 4500..." Since that time, the command has evolved to support a wide variety of Navy weapons, provide imagery processing and exploitation systems, precision targeting systems, as well provide innovative approaches to conducting maritime power projection. In September 1997, Prevatt assumed command as program manager (PMA-281) for the nine major systems providing Command and Control, Imagery Processing, Precision Targeting and Mission Planning essential to fleet Tomahawk and Joint Precision Weapons. His team received multiple commendations for operational Tomahawk support during Operations Desert Fox and Allied Force/Noble Anvil and numerous Secretary of the Navy awards for Acquisition Innovation and Reform. Born in Stuttgart, West Germany, into a military family, he earned his bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering and computer science, Summa Cum Laude, from Duke University in 1977. After commissioning in May, he reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida, for naval flight training in June 1977, and graduated with distinction. Prevatt completed P-3 replacement pilot training at VP-30, NAS Jacksonville, Florida in 1979, then reported to his first operational assignment with the "Pegasus" of VP-11, there completing two LANT deployments. After jet transition at NAS Kingsville, Texas, in 1982, he graduated with Class 84 of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in December 1983. He joined Force Warfare Aircraft Test Directorate at Naval Air Test Center NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to direct P-3 engine performance monitoring, defensive electronic countermeasures, and survivability and vulnerability developmental test. He then returned to TPS as an instructor. In 1986, he joined the "Wizards" of VPU-2 where he directed multiple WESTPAC deployments. Prevatt earned his master's degree with distinction in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in December 1990. After graduation, he completed the program manager's course at the Defense Systems Management College, then began his association with Tomahawk as director of Test and Evaluation for Program Executive Officer, Cruise Missile Project during both Desert Watch and Desert Storm and the accelerated fleet introduction of Block III. In April 1994, he was selected to be deputy program manager for Combat Identification and then for Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures for Program Executive Officer, Tactical Aircraft Programs (PEO(T)). SMALL, Jim jimandkellysmall@gmpexpress.net "...Served in VP-9 80-83. It was a great experience due to the people I flew with. Bill Blackburn, Doyle McEwen, Mark Machin, KC Stangl, Vic Ristvedt, Mick Kohler, Dan Kuper, "Hutch," Wayne Roberts, Dave Jackson, and Luis Rivera come immediately to mind from the crew. Hit NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NAS Adak, Alaska, & NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan. Went to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland for the "NFO at Test Pilot School" thing and then flew P-3 avionics/weapons test projects for 2 years. Served in VPU-2 86-89. It was my best tour, hands down, because of the people I flew with. Joel Walker, John Orem, Mark Ackerman, Rob Leeds, Dwight Shepherd, Rick Fridley & Crew 13. Went on to Monterey, aero, & AEDO. Still on active duty and set to retire this summer. Life's a ride and VPU was a high point. I still have about 98 of the world famous "WARNING - DAY VFR ONLY" stickers since mamasan would not make less than 100 with "#1 special glue." Stuff like that was almost as fun as kicking commie butt. Post facto apologies to Pappy and the boys from VP-50. You were good to us and didn't deserve the heat but I trust there was an up-side in there somewhere. Gotta love covert ops. Cheers to all..." [02MAR2005]

SNELL, Troy snelldog2004@yahoo.com "...I became a VP-17 White Lightning in 1988, where I spent the next six years doing WESPAC and NAS Adak, Alaska deployments. Just a fresh faced 18 year old from Ohio on the mean streets of Olongapo (the horror, the horror). NAS Adak, Alaska was cold, but I managed to meet an AE in my command that I later married. With NAS Adak, Alaska & PI closed, we switched deployments to NSF Diego Garcia, and Japan and soon after I divorced the afore mentioned AE. A boring tour at the TSC at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii point followed. I became one of "Jerry's Kids" with VPU-2 where I had a blast for another five years. By now we had moved from NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii to MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, so I thought I'd try another TSC tour. It was as boring as before with the added bonus of all the Admiral's staff BS. I did manage to snag me an awesome little hula girl, whom I married, and puts up with me to this day. After 16 years in Hawaii, my streak was destined to come to an end and I now find myself basking in the paradise of NSA Bahrain. My year of exile will be over next month (Jul 05), and will be headed back to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii to try a tour at the MOCC. Unless the Navy does something crazy, like make me a Chief, I'll retire out in 2006. Good times... good times..." [BIO/E-Mail Updated 27JUN2005 | BIO/E-Mail Updated 21FEB2003 | 03AUG98]

SNODGRASS, AT2 Mark crazy-al611@bresnan.net "...Good to see some names on here that I recognize and would love to hear from you. I was assigned to VPU-2 from November 1995 to October 1999. Went from ATAA to AT2 during that time. In early 1996 I went TAD to AIMD NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii and worked in 610, 61D, and 690. Made the big move over to MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in 1999 and spent the little time I had left there. After getting out I moved back home to Montana and joined the Air Guard as a traditional guardsman. I am now a full time Avionics Technician with the 120 Fighter Wing MTANG working on the F-16C Falcon. I will always have a place in my heart for the sound of 4 turbo-prop engines though. So drop me a line anytime if you are in the area..." [05FEB2004]

WILLIAMSON, CDR Mark R. http://www.brigmiramar.navy.mil/cowebbio.htm "...Commander Mark R. Williamson was born in East Patchogue, New York and raised on the eastern end of Long Island, New York in the small town of Cutchogue. He attended the State University of New York at Brockport and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in May of 1983. Following four months of training at Aviation Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as an Ensign in January of 1985. In February of 1985, he reported to VT-10 in NAS Pensacola, Florida and was ultimately designated a Naval Flight Officer in January, 1986, following the successful completion of Advanced Navigation training at Mather AFB in Sacramento, California. Commander Williamson's initial fleet assignment was to VQ-1, NAS Agana, Guam. During this tour, he completed over 20 deployments throughout the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean from the Bering Strait to the Gulf of Oman. During these deployments he supported such operations as Praying Mantis, Earnest Will, Coyote, Shooting Star, Team Spirit and WESTPAC 89. While in VQ-1, he served as Legal Officer, Assistant Electronic Warfare Officer, Brigand Officer, and Assistant Training Officer, as well as achieving the operational designation of EP-3E Electronic Warfare Mission Commander; a designation rarely achieved by first tour Aviators. In 1989, Commander Williamson was selected to attend the U. S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS), NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. While at USNTPS, he flew over 26 different types of aircraft, including every type of operational naval aircraft. He graduated from USNTPS in December of 1990, and was designated a Naval Test Flight Officer. Following USNTPS, Commander Williamson reported to the former Naval Air Test Center (NATC), renamed in 1992 the Naval Air Warfare Center - Aircraft Division, also located at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. While at NATC, he served primarily as the Project Officer in the developmental testing of the ES-3A "Shadow" aircraft. During this time he uncovered, documented, and reported to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) over 1,000 aircraft deficiencies, and ensured that contractor and government engineers worked together to design and implement corrections to the more serious of these deficiencies. Additionally, he "branched out" and worked on the developmental testing of other aircraft such as the F-14D, EA-6B and the EP-3E ARIES II. Commander Williamson joined the "Ravens" of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Six (VQ-6) in July of 1993. While at VQ-6, he completed a full deployment and "workups" with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) EIGHT (USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT) as well as workups with two additional Air Wings: CVW-17 (USS SARATOGA) and CVW-3 (USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER). Significant operations and exercises he participated in included Adriatic Operations such as Combat Support flights during "Deliberate Force" (resulting in the Dayton Peace Accords), "Deny Flight", and "Sharp Guard", as well as Middle East Operations such as Operation "Southern Watch" overland Iraq. Additionally, he participated in "Desert Rescue" in February 1994 and the Joint Air Defense Organization/Joint Engagement Zone (JADO/JEZ) Nearland Test in March 1994. Finally, he served as the Assistance Training Officer, Safety Officer, and Electronic Warfare/Intelligence Officer, as well as the VQ-6 Detachment Delta Assistant Officer in Charge (AOIC). In November 1996, Commander Williamson reported to Sea Control Squadron VS-41, the S-3A/B and ES-3A Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS). As the senior ES-3A instructor training Pilots, Naval Flight Officers and Aircrewman earmarked for the Fleet VQ Squadrons, he served as the Assistant FRS Training Officer and ES-3A Department Head, while achieving designations as a Carrier Suitability and ES-3A Flight Instructor. Additionally, he became a qualified Ground Instructor on ES-3A "AOR Requirements", "Differences", and Mission Avionics System Trainer (MAST) courses. Most significantly, while at VS-41 he established a "stand-alone" ES-3A Department as well as procured funding and brought a new trainer "on-line" to enhance ES-3A FRS training. Following VS-41, Commander Williamson joined the "Wizards" of VPU-2 in July 1997. While at VPU-2 he completed four 60-day deployments to the 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility (AOR) as a Detachment OIC and Mission Commander. Additionally, significant operations and exercises he participated in included Javelin Maker, Bantam Runner, Ellipse's Alpha and Charlie, Kernal Blitz, RIMPAC 98, Fowl Eagle, and Operation Southern Watch. Finally, he served as the Operations and Training Officer, successfully leading two very large and critical departments. In 1999, Commander Williamson was selected to attend the U.S. Naval War College (NWC), Newport, Rhode Island. He completed the National Security Decision Making, Strategy and Policy, and Joint Maritime Operations syllabuses and was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in March of 2000. Additionally, he matriculated in the Master of Business Administration Program at Salve Regina University. Commander Williamson reported to the Joint US Military Affairs Group-Korea in April of 2000. Assigned as the Navy/Marine Corps Aviation Program Manager, Commander Williamson was responsible for all US-ROK Navy/Marine Corps Aviation Security Assistance and Foreign Military Sales, and maintained very close relationships with ROK Navy organizations including: NAVSEASYSCOM (Taejon), Airwing-SIX (Pohang), Ministry of National Defense (Seoul), as well as various US and Korean Defense industry companies. Commander Williamson joined the professionals at Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar in May of 2002, and assumed the duties of the Executive Officer. In June he took Command and is currently the Commanding Officer of NAVCONBRIG NAS Miramar, California. Operationally, Commander Williamson has accumulated both land-based and seaborne flight experience with over 3,700 flight hours and 300 carrier landings. His decorations include: the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards, one with the Combat "V" decoration), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), and numerous other campaign and service awards..."
