Note NOTICE: "...I would like to know if anyone else has contracted Mesothelioma from being on the USS Albemarle (AV-5). My husband served aboard this ship from 1958-1960. He died 12/18/01 from this type of cancer from being exposed to asbestos. I have talked to the VA and they think there might have been a chance he contracted Mesothelioma from being on this ship. he said he use to work around the big guns and of course deck work. He was a great man and leaves behind myself, three daughters, 8 grandkids and many friends. Thank you for helping me with this...Jaycee FLICKSTAR@MSN.COM..." [26SEP2002]

Note NOTICE: "...I went ashore on Samar PI near a village (Guivan). As I recall Navy 3149 was the designation. We had tents of 4 men to the tent. Thence we were crossing Samar and boarded LCI's which took us to Manila Bay. There was considerable numbers there, and perhaps a air strip had been constructed. Anyone who may recall me please contact me. We arrived Samar on the General John Pope having been transferred to that ship from the USS Albemarle (AV-5) that ran aground while negotiation the Panama Canal. Very hot wait on the lake at mid Canal. Seperated from several friends we were from Charlotte, NC. I am now 77 years +. Thank you in advance...Roy Smith roysmithusn_mcl@msn.com..." [19SEP2004]

Note NOTICE: "...My father-in-law was a Navy doctor serving onboard the USS Albemarle (AV-5) during WWII. He died in 1993 at age 86. We were registering him at the National World War II Memorial WebSite and came up short of information. To the best of our knowledge, John A. Renner was a member of the ship's crew from late 1941 - 1944. If anyone out there remembers him, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks so much....Jim Nicholson jimnbow@earthlink.net..."
