Bayless graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1979 with a degree in Systems Engineering. He was designated a Naval Aviator in April of 1981 and completed Fleet Replacement training at VP-30 in November of that same year. From December 1981 to December 1984, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was assigned to VP-16 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. During his tour he was designated a Patrol Plane Commander and Mission Commander making deployments to NAS Bermuda, NS Rota, Spain, and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. The "War Eagles" were recognized with a Battle E, the Golden Wrench, and three Meritorious Unit Commendations during this period. In January of 1985, he reported to VT-27 in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas as an Instructor Pilot in the T-34C Mentor. As a Flight Leader and solo check pilot, he instructed in Basic Familiarization, Radio Instruments, Night Navigation, and Precision Acrobatics. After affiliating with the Naval Reserve, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless reported to the "Executioners" of VP-93 in November of 1989 at NAF Detroit, Michigan. During this tour, he served as Department Head for Administration, Operations, and Maintenance. He led armed patrols in Operation Sharp Guard supporting UN sanctions against the former Yugoslav Republics and also flew sorties during Support Democracy and Able Manner supporting the UN sanctioned embargo of Haiti. With the disestablishment of VP-93, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless received orders in the spring of 1994 to VP-68 at NAF Andrews, Maryland. He served as an Executive Assistant and then as the Executive Officer of the "Black Hawks". While attached to VP-68, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless supported multiple operations throughout the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to include counter narcotics missions from Roosevelt Roads, Key West, and Howard AFB in Panama. In June of 1996, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless reported aboard VP-66 in NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, as the PCO and took command the following month. The "Liberty Bells" won the CNO Safety Award for 1996 and 1997 as well as the MPA International Symposium Competition for ASW Excellence during his tenure. In November of 1997, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless assumed the duties of Executive Officer NR CINCUSNAVEUR 513 (CNE 513) at Great Lakes, Ill. The command received the Leo V. Bilger Award for outstanding Surface Augment Unit that year. During this period, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was selected to become the first East Coast Facilitator of the Navy's Culture Workshop process representing COMNAVAIRLANT. His next assignment was CO of NR Tactical Support Center 472 (TSC 472) from October 1998 to September of 1999. TSC 472 provided watch officers for NATO Operations Allied Force and Noble Anvil from TSC Sigonella in support of highly visible Balkan missions. Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless then commanded NR Battle Group Staff Eight (BGS-8) at Forest Park, Ill., from October 1999 to September 2001. While supporting COMCRUDESGRU EIGHT, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless deployed with IKEBATGRU and also served as the Deputy JFACC for Unified Endeavor. He subsequently took command of NR CINCUSNAVEUR Joint Task Force Contingency Unit 413 (CNE JTFCU 413) in October 2001. During this command tour, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was recalled to active duty from April 2002 to March 2003 as Deputy Commander, Task Force Five Seven at NAVCENT NSA Bahrain in support of Enduring Freedom. He was nominated for Flag rank in February 2003. Among his awards are four Meritorious Service Medals and the Navy Achievement Medal. He has attended the National Defense University's NATO Staff Officer Course, the Reserve Components National Security Course, and CINCLANTFLT's Senior Officer Course. Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless is also the Vice President of the Detroit Metro Chapter of the Navy League and has sat on numerous promotion and selection boards. In 1983, he transferred to VP-92 at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts, where he assumed the duties of Executive Officer. In October 1984, he became the squadron's tenth Commanding Officer. Returning to NAS Jacksonville, Florida in 1985, he reported to VTU-7474, serving as Training Officer and Chief Staff Officer. In 1987, he became Commanding Officer of NR Helicopter Antisubmarine Wing 0174. He subsequently served as Commanding Officer of NR Mobile Maintenance Facility ALFA, NAS Jacksonville, Florida 0274, VTU-7474, and NR Carrier Group 0667 at NAS Atlanta, Georgia. Following commissioning, he attended flight training in NAS Pensacola, Florida and NAS Corpus Christi, Texas, earning his wings from VT-28 in March 1985. He attended P-3 Fleet Replacement Squadron training with VP-30 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida, and remained in Jacksonville for his follow on assignment to the War Eagles of VP-16. While attached to VP-16, Commander Black deployed to NAS Sigonella, Sicily and NAS Bermuda and conducted detached operations in Iceland, Scotland, Central Europe, South and Central America, the Azores and Eastern Mediterranean. In the summer of 1989, Commander Black was selected to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Upon graduation with Class 97, he reported to the Force Warfare Aircraft Test Directorate as a P-3 project officer. He was involved with P-3 avionics, ordnance and aircrew systems projects and was the primary project officer responsible for T-34C training and flight test. In the fall of 1992, he reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Sea Duty Component, Dallas, Texas, and served as a Special Projects Officer. Commander Black was selected as an Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO) in the fall of 1994 and reported to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), Crystal City, Virginia as the AEDO Community Manager and Total Force Manpower Manager. During this tour, he worked jointly with the Bureau of Naval Personnel to implement the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act within NAVAIR for all military personnel. In November of 1997, Commander Black was assigned to the T-45/T-6A Program Office (PMA-273) and served as the Deputy Director for the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) Integrated Test Team, responsible for the development and qualification of the T-6A aircraft. He served as the lead Navy representative on the U.S. Air Force-led program and had the privilege of teaming with the 418th Test Squadron, Edwards Air Force Base, California, for this effort. He reported to VX-20, where he served as the Chief Test Pilot prior to assuming command in June 2002. Commander Black has over 3,700 hours in over 30 makes and models of fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Released from active duty in December 1980, he re-enlisted in the Navy in February 1984. Upon reentering the Navy, he attended AE Class "C" School, NAS Millington, Tennessee. Afterwards, he attended Naval Aircrewman Candidate School, Pensacola and P-3 Flight Engineer School, NAS Jacksonville, Florida. His next assignment was to VP-49, NAS Jacksonville, Florida. He served as primary NATOPS instructor for the flight engineer position and deployed to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, NAS Bermuda, and back to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. Following his first VP tour, he was selected for assignment to the P-3 Fleet Replacement Squadron, VP-30, NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Here he served as classroom instructor, Fleet IUT (Instructor Under Training) Instructor, Foreign Military Sales (FMS), Instructor, VP-30 primary NATOPS/Alternate CNAL evaluator, and primary CNAL evaluator. During this demanding tour, he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer. His next posting was to VP-16, NAS Jacksonville, Florida. While assigned, he advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer and served as the Line Division CPO, QA Division SCPO, and Safety/NATOPS Department SCPO. Here he completed a tri-site deployment to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, NAS Keflavik, Iceland and Panama as well as a Mediterranean deployment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. In May of 1997, he reported to the Naval Force Aircraft Test Squadron (Force Warfare), NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Initially assigned as the VP Maintenance Division SCPO, he assumed the role of CMC after being advanced to Master Chief in April of 1998. Following his tour at Force Warfare, he was selectively assigned to the Bureau of Personnel, Sea Duty Component, Dallas, TX, where he served as the Command Master Chief. In April 2002, he reported to VP-8, NAS Brunswick, Maine as the Command Master Chief. VP-8 deployed to NAS Sigonella, Sicily from February to August 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Additionally, VP-8 deployed to Japan from December 2004 to June 2005, a first for an east coast VP squadron since the mid 1980's. Master Chief Blackston started his current assignment as Command Master Chief of CPRW-11 in August 2005. Master Chief Blackston is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (April 2000). I left 16 may 67 to go to NAS Brunswick, Maine then B school 72. Then I went to VP-24 NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to move to NAS Jacksonville, Florida again. Back to NAS Brunswick, Maine VP-26 73-75. NAS Keflavik, Iceland and NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal alot..next as a AMS1 went to NAF Washington, D.C. 76-79 Maintaining PFP for the Pentagon. Then onto NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, serving in operations as a LCDR until his retirement in 1974. Don began a second career settling with Artistic Fence Company until 2001. He enjoyed skiing, hunting, bridge, cribbage and bowling. Don was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and Past Grand Knight in Oak Harbor and was a bingo manager for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Terry; son, Douglas J. Brouillard of Everett; daughter Jennie M. I do remember the long hours of flight time. This happened from 61-63 and during part of that time I spent many hours in the plastic nose of your P2V's shooting photos of the Russian ships after they came out of the Straits of Gebralter and into the Atlantic. Many of the photos in the newpaper of the rockets on the decks were mine. I could even spot the ships on a clear day faster than radar -). You guys brought me home everyday from those rides. Thanks! I remember the pilot chewing my butt out because I fell asleep in the alleyway and landed that way. Food was great. One day we even mapped the top of the Rock of Gebralter using a rope as the inboard part of the 9" camera mount and the releaf tube for ventury to suck the film onto the platinum. Great day. After leaving NS Rota, Spain I transferred to P5M's in VP-31 out of NAS North Island, San Diego, California. He attended the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in 1983. Completing flight training in March 1985, he was designated a Naval Flight Officer. Upon completion of P-3 Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) training with VP-30, Commander Freitag joined VP-56 in November 1985. While assigned to the "Dragons", he served as Avionics Division Officer, Assistant Tactics Officer and NFO Training Officer and completed deployments to NAS Bermuda and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. In September 1989, Commander Freitag reported to VP-31 at NAS Moffett Field, California as an instructor NFO. He served as the Student Control Officer, Aircrew Training Officer and NFO Training Officer. In July 1992, Commander Freitag reported to Commander, Carrier Group Four, where he served as Assistant Air Operations Officer. During his tour he served on every Atlantic-based aircraft carrier for Composite Training Unit Exercises. Following this tour, he was assigned in June 1994 to CPW-11 where he was assigned as a TSC Watch Officer. Following P-3 refresher training, he reported to the "War Eagles" of VP-16 for department head duty in July 1995. During this tour he served as Command Services Officer, Assistant Operations Officer, and Maintenance Officer deploying to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR; NAS Keflavik, Iceland; and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. In May 1997, Commander Freitag reported to Commander, Task Force Eighty-Four in Norfolk, VA where he served as the Force Requirements Officer. In September 2000, Commander Freitag reported to USS Nimitz as Weapons Officer and Force Protection Officer, completing an Atlantic to Pacific inter-fleet transfer while onboard. In May 2002, Commander Freitag reported to Supreme, Allied Commander Atlantic, where he became lead NATO Strategic Exercise planner. Kerber Froehlich. In 1913 he and his family relocated to a farm in Wesley, Iowa where he grew up, graduating from Wesley High School in 1929. He served in the United States Navy for thirty years from 1932 to 1962. He resided in Pensacola, Florida since 1935 when not traveling with the U.S. Navy seeing combat action in World War II in the Thousand Mile War in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands campaign as a Plane Captain on Catalina Flying Boats with VP-41." Uncle Ed served with VP-16 and VP-40. There entries on VPNAVY using the alternate spelling of Froelich. VP-16 and a number of other seaplane patrol squadrons, then based at the NAS Sand Point, Seattle, Washington were shortly re-designated numerically into the VP-40 series. VP-16, one of the five patrol squadrons at Sand Point, became VP-41, flying PBY-3 aircraft. Two of the patrol squadrons flew PBY-3s, and the other three flew the predecessor aircraft, P2Y-2s. He was ACCM1 flight engineer (Plane Captain), later commissioned, retiring as CDR. His son, Ed Froelich, Jr. is retired CAPT USN. Ed flew with pilot LT. Paul Ramsey (later CINCPAC) and RM1 Lee B. Napoli in A/C #41P2 (PBY-3) in the Aleutians in 1941, and was on the first flight that discovered the first (and only) Japanese landing on U.S. soil. Following Flight Training, he was designated a Naval Flight Officer in March 1993. Upon completion of Fleet Replacement Training at VP-30 in February 1994, Lieutenant Commander Fuller reported for his first operational tour with the "War Eagles" of VP-16 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Serving as ASW TACCO and NFO Training Officer, he deployed to NAS Keflavik, Iceland and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. He was also designated a Patrol Plane Tactical Coordinator, Mission Commander, Instructor TACCO and a NATOPS Instructor TACCO. In January of 1997, Lieutenant Commander Fuller returned to the "Pro's Nest" of VP-30 to serve as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Instructor. While assigned to VP-30 he served as a member of the ASUW Improvement Program (AIP) Fleet Introduction Team (FIT), where he was responsible for the introduction of AIP aircraft throughout the P-3 community. After a year of serving on the FIT, he led the Fleet NATOPS Team as the Senior NFO Evaluator. Designations included FRS Instructor TACCO, Mission Commander, AIP FIT Instructor, Instructor Under Training (IUT) Instructor and Fleet NATOPS Evaluator. In January 1999, Lieutenant Commander Fuller was accepted into the Training and Administration of Reserve (TAR) Program and reported to the Reserve ASW Training Center (RATCEN) at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where he served as the Training Officer, Block Modification Upgrade Program (BMUP) Transition Officer and Director of Training. While at RATCEN he developed and led the Naval Reserve through its transition from the P-3C Update II/II.5 to the most advanced ASW platform, the BMUP aircraft. After a rewarding tour at RATCEN, Lieutenant Commander Fuller reported back to NAS Jacksonville, Florida in September 2002 where he served as the Training Officer and Maintenance Officer for the VP-62 "Broadarrows." There I completed qualifications for Mission Commander in the P-3A "Orion" aircraft and held collateral duties as Public Affairs Officer. Our operational deployments included NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, tracking the first Soviet nuclear submarine detected in the Gulf of Mexico; NATO Maritime Patrol School in Londonderry, Northern Ireland; NATO exercises in Norway; and routine ASW missions from NAS Bermuda, the NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. I was released from active duty in December 1971 and affiliated with the Naval Air Reserve and was assigned to VP-62. In addition to leading a top-rated aircrew, I held ground positions in every department, including three department head assignments, to round out more than 13 years in the reserve squadron. I was transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve where he held command of the Naval Air Facility Mayport, Fla., reserve augment unit (NAF-0174) and Volunteer Training Unit 7474 (VTU-7474). I also performed active duty for training (ADT) assignments in the Pentagon, Naval War College, Navy Postgraduate School, Air University and National Defense University. I was recalled to active duty in 1991 and designated Project RESTAR (Reserve Transition and Recognition) Officer for Naval Air Reserve NAS Jacksonville, Florida responsible for the welfare and recognition of more than 400 reservists mobilized during the Gulf War. I was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal and Letters of Commendation as "the architect of an innovative, effective and extremely successful (public affairs) program." I remained affiliated with the Naval Air Reserve until his retirement in 1997 with the grade of Captain (O-6) and 30 years of commissioned service. My military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with gold star, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (5 awards), National Defense Medal with bronze star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon with two bronze stars, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization device and silver hour glass.
