A BIT OF HISTORY: "31JAN61--Project Mercury...the first aircraft ON TOP was PATRON 18 prowling aircraft that Commander R. A. Sampson, USN of Lansford Pennsylvania, (Commanding Officer of the Squadron) had sent out to mosey around just in case. Not assigned to any particular search station, as were the other 5 aircraft, the prowling P2V enabled LT. A. W. Howard, USN, Ormond Beach, Florida, and G. T. Belderback, AT2, USN of Durand, Wisconsin, to identify the space craft in the water approx 27 minutes after the overshoot occured. Despite the unexpectedly greater distance of the capsule from the closest ships and the long period the aircraft had been on station during a number of delays in the launch, they maintained contact with the floating spacecraft by nice adjustments of relief flights by Commander Sampson..."
