UPDATE "I was in VP-19 when their bright red and yellow eagle (or phoenix) tail insignia was first placed on the tails of the aircraft. The XO at that time, CDR Jampoler, commissioned a friend of his (local artist) to paint a full-scale template, which was then taped to the tail of one of the aircraft in the hanger for inspection. The Skipper, CDR Schroder, took one look at it, and ordered it removed IMMEDIATELY (his actual wording was much more terse and "colorful"). Immediately after the Change of Command, CDR Jampoler ordered the bird painted on the tails of all squadron aircraft, thus the birth of "The Milpitas Chicken.."
