HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...MK-90 photo was on Ault Field at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and all the other photos were taken on NAS Adak, Alaska. Those bombs that are standing vertically in the background are Mk-15 water/sand fills that we use to use for bombing practice. Little history (trivia, I seem to be full of it) on the YB-11 photos. Back in "those days" we had crew maintenance, and each crew performed maintenance on their own aircraft. At that particular time the left recip. has blown #9 cylinder and we were doing an engine change. My job in that process was to clean the oil tank and insure that there were no metal particles in it. It sure was a dirty job. I can't imagine that happening today in any operational unit, but in reality it worked out great for the Navy. It sure cuts down on maintenance cost when thems that flys'em also fix'em. The servicing was also the responsibility of the flight crew and that's where the fuel truck picture came in..."
