A BIT OF HISTORY: "...In '67 or '68, on the day of change of command, the squadron sent to Texas. As luck would have it, when the aircraft (P2V-7) attempted to land, only one of the main gear came down. After circling for a period of time while everyone tugged mightily on the gear release cables (remember that wonderful main spar that ran through the flight deck?....) the decision was made to do a gear up landing. Ultimately the landing went well with no injuries, however there was a flash fire in the bomb-bay, and the crew (motley) evacuated with great haste. One of the crewmembers was AOC Banda, and after his return to Brunswick I remember people asking him about how rapidly he left the aircraft. In response to the question: "Did you run?" he said: "No, but I passed a lot of people who were.........." Later the accident investigation board found plier marks on every gear cable EXCEPT the one which would have released the stubborn main mount..." Contributed by Roger A.
