In 1960 my father, an Air Force Sergeant was assigned duty there. He found out NAS Keflavik, Iceland was six miles away and three months later my Mother and three brothers were the only dependents supported by the radar site. We lived in Keflavik, Iceland for nine months. The Air Force base provided us with school and other things. In 1971 the Navy deployed VP-56 to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. It almost felt like home. When I got there they were switch over from the old PBMs to the new P5M-1's. 56 ATAN's came in from "A" school at NAS Memphis, Tennessee in a six week period. Most of the officers were Reserves. Commander Miller was Captain. With all the new ATAN's the only thing I ever heard Chief Hayden, our Shop say for Months was "Koonts, You are going to school Monday". He had a friend over at FAETU that would make room in the classes for us on the different electronic equipment. When we had 1200 hours on the P5M-1's we got the P5M-2's ..." NAS Norfolk, Virginia Newspaper..."DRAGON" Squadron Departs -- Last week members of VP-56 discovered that its a big job to move an entire aircraft squadron up to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland (left). Not the least of the difficult moving was transferring this heavy squadron sign that ATR2 John J. Grey (I) and AX2 Anthony C. Hegge could hardly lift by themselves. If necessary those squadrons could pull personnel from Reserve Units across the US to augment its normal crews. There were many such Reserve Composit Squadrons at the various VP Airfields. NAS Moffett Field, California, NAS New Orleans, Louisiana, NAS Memphis, Tennessee, NAS Jacksonville, Florida, etc. We flew VP-94 aircraft when we were on our weekends and cruises, and even went on cruises to Lajues with them...."
