D'AMECOURT, ADR3 John newbuilder@msn.com "...I joined the USNR in March 1957 while still in high school I served with VP-661 and VP-662 at NAS Anacostia, Washington, D.C. until I went on active duty in 1958. After boot at Great Lakes served out my 2 years at NAS Kingsville, Texas. After separation returned to VP-661 and VP-662(1). In November 1961, I was recalled to active duty and the squadron was deployed to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. We were recalled because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Soon after, we were deployed to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to patrol the Windward Passage to search for and photograph Soviet ships carrying missiles. After 5 weeks of daily air operations, our P2Vs (I think we had 12) were spent and needed serious maintance. We returned to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, patched up and commenced training flights. I was rated an Aviation Machinist Mate (ADR)and got an early separation in May 1962. Shortly after I made ADR-3, but was never to resume reserve duty. I was released from duty to attend college and was formerly discharged at the end of my 6-year enlistment in March 1963. I look back on my time with the squadron as good years with good people. Cuba was the highlight. We worked our butts off keeping those planes in the air while just beyond the perimeter fence, Raul Castro's army threatened to invade. That's when we really appreciated our USMC brethern. Today I live in Virginia not far from DC..." [03FEB2010]

I was AO3 (aviation ordnance), spent much of the time hanging rockets on P2V wings (believe ours were P2V-5 version) and since we had many PO3's due to merging squadrons, I wanted to be in the warm hangar instead of the flight line. Transferred rating to PT3 and deployed to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba with squadron to fly in nose bubble monitoring removal of Russian missiles from Cuba. Many exciting interactions with Russian freighters, flying around them at low altitudes in the P2V to photo deck cargo. After return to reserve duty, transferred to air intelligence squadron at NAS Los Alamitos, California..." [05MAR2014]

My active duty was on the USS Bennington CVS 20 from 1965 to 1967 on WesPac duty in the Tonkin gulf (Yankee Station). My final rank was ATR2 in the avionics shop. I trained for the APS-20 radar crew position but never really make it. Always wanted to fly in those beautiful P2V's. Used my GI Bill to get my commercial pilots license and have been flying other things since. I'm now a video television producer at NASA HQ..." [22OCT2003]
