LANE, William Otto c/o his son John Lane Purpelfx@aol.com "...I have found your website to be very interesting. I have found some very interesting facts that I was never aware of. My father, William Otto Lane served in the Navy from 11-26-41 to 10-4-45. He served with VP-73, HedRon 9-1 and HedRon, FAW-8. My Dad died in 1970, but I am interested in contacting those who may have served with him. The interesting note that I found on your website was that he was at NAS Brunswick, Maine when it was commissioned on 4-15-43. Before that he was at the Portland Section from 3-12-43 to 4-15-43. Thank you very much for your work and time. Learning about history has always been exciting. You have helped me and many more like me. Again, thanks..." [27AUG98]

Shortly after Daddy died in 1974, a squadron member gave my mother a copy of a novel based on the squdron's war experience written by said squadron member. The book disappeared before I could read it and I don't remember the title. Daddy returned from Africa early due to medical reasons. I believe he was the gunnery officer, and was a 1939 graduate of Annapolis. I would love to hear from anyone who knew Daddy, and would like to learn the name and author of the novel inspired by the squadron's experience. Any stories would be greatly appreciated. Mcgruder Tuttle and Brick Blackburn are two names who I am aware of that he served with in the squadron..." Contributed by William R.
