Twenty-two Sailors from VP-8's chapter of the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) were invited to tour the Ahmed Al-Fateh Islamic Center Feb. 21. The complex is the national mosque for the Kingdom of Bahrain and symbolizes Bahrain's religious identity.

"I think this was a great opportunity to take time out of our busy schedules to learn about the religious and cultural identity of Bahrain" said ATAN Nicholas Monastiero. "I had a great time with my fellow "Fighting Tigers" CSADD members and look forward to more cultural enrichment opportunities in the future" he added.

The mosque offers tours for Bahrain's non-Muslim residents and visiting military forces to promote the Kingdom of Bahrain as a modern and tolerant Muslim country. Construction of the mosque began Dec. 17, 1984 and was complete on June 2, 1988. The Grand Mosque occupies 69,965 square feet and the entire Ahmed Al-Fateh Islamic Center complex is more than 37 acres in size. The facility can accommodate in excess of 7,000 worshipers during prayers.

VP-8 is deployed to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility conducting maritime security operations and supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The VP-8 Fighting Tigers are home based at NAS Jacksonville, Florida.

BAHRAIN Sailors assigned to the "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8, participated in a community relations project at the RIA-Institute in Bahrain.

During the COMREL, sailors read books, played games and colored pictures with the children, putting smiles on all the children's faces.

"There's nothing better than dedicating your time to another person, and the children absolutely love it when service members visit," said student director Christine Gordon. "We really hope to continue this partnership because service members bring pride, professionalism, and know how to behave around the children, plus the children always enjoy the visits," she added.

With the mission statement of "Education for All," the RIA-Institute caters to the needs of mainstream learners, as well as students with physical and intellectual disabilities that require special educational programs.

"This is the most fun I've had on a COMREL in quite a while" said Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 3rd Class Adetolani Adeosun. "I definitely plan to volunteer here again because I had a great time and all of the children seemed to have had a great time as well," he added.

The VP-8 "Fighting Tigers" depart NAS Jacksonville at the end of November for a dual-site, seven-month deployment to NSA Bahrain, Oman and El Salvador.

VP-8 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Todd Libby stated, "through a focus on pride, people, and professionalism, all 350 Fighting Tigers are ready to deploy in what is scheduled to be our last P-3C Orion deployment prior to transitioning to the P-8 Poseidon."

The squadron's mission will focus on maritime surveillance and reconnaissance. VP-8 will relieve the "Screaming Eagles" of VP-1 in NSA Bahrain, Oman and the "Golden Swordsmen" of VP-47 in El Salvador.

Cmdr. Derek Adametz, VP-8's executive officer commented,"VP-8 Fighting Tigers continue to set the standard for maritime patrol aviation. They are both ready and excited to deploy."

Prior to deployment, VP-8's inter-deployment readiness cycle consisted of supporting carrier strike group exercises, anti-submarine warfare training, individual and command qualifications and certifications. These included: operational readiness evaluation, Fleet Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization evaluations, weapons inspections, overseas deployment training requirements, and Middle-East/Central America cultural training.

"I am incredibly proud of all that the Fighting Tigers have accomplished during the past 12 months, from supporting the fleet to supporting the community. The men and women of VP-8 have made a positive difference" said Libby.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 worked alongside tigers and other big cats during a community relations project at the Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary, March, 5.

Started in 1982, the Catty Shack Ranch is North Florida's longest operating sanctuary. A non-profit organization, its mission is to provide a safe, loving, forever home for endangered big cats, and to educate the public about their plight in the wild and captivity. Current residents include tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, bobcats, arctic foxes, and coatimundis.

"It is so important to have volunteer groups help us at the ranch, because there is so much work to be done," said Kim Kyle assistant director/volunteer coordinator & handler. "We are an all volunteer organization with no paid employees, so we appreciate any outside help."

VP-8 volunteers helped build up and repaint a safety fence and laid down fertilizer at a lawn area.

"We are not professionals, but as sailors, we always find a way to get the job done when necessary," said Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Pedro A. Rodrguez, VP-8 command photographer.

"I had a lot of fun doing the work we did, just because it is something I don't do every day, and it made me remember some of the things I used to do before I joined the Navy 10 years ago," said the Gunica, Puerto Rico native.

The new fence will serve as a second boundary to protect people from reaching into the cats' cages.

"We always have several projects ongoing, from building new enclosures/habitats for new rescues, to repairing fencing, building feed platforms, den boxes, kitty cabins, painting, landscaping and fundraising, among others," said Kyle. "This group was amazing and we so hope they can come back on a regular basis and help us. We so appreciate these members' service to our country and our organization."

The Jacksonville, Fla., based "Fighting Tigers" are undergoing deployment readiness workups, in preparation for their upcoming deployment.

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. - The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 participated in a Clay County Habitat for Humanity community relations project (COMREL), Feb. 21.

According to their website, Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Today, Habitat for Humanity is a true world leader in addressing the issues of poverty housing. Through the work of Habitat, thousands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem--decent housing for all.

Eleven sailors volunteered to help the entity build a three bedroom home, lying down tar paper and roof panels. The volunteers started early in the morning working as a team to get the job done.

"It feels great and rewarding knowing you are part of a project that is going to benefit and make a difference in a family in need," said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Walter Murillo a native of Miami. "It also helps me appreciate and value more the things that I have."

According to the Clay County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Coordinator Pamela Portridge the military assistance to the organization is essential to their success. Almost 80 percent of their volunteers come from the military.

The home will be assigned for sale with no interest rate to make the payments affordable for qualifying family.

This is the first of several COMREL projects VP-8 plans to participate in since coming back from deployment last December, leading to a series of future events with different non-profit entities.

"In my opinion, we, in the military are an extremely blessed group of people. Not only is working for others humbling, but also part of our ethos as service members," said Naval Aircrewman (Avionics) 2nd Class Mark Willard.

"Furthermore, we should strive to be an example for those around us, as we are highly esteemed by the public, youth in particular," added the Mount Vernon Ind. native.

The Jacksonville, Fla., based "Fighting Tigers" are undergoing deployment readiness workups, in preparation for their upcoming deployment.

NAVAL AIR STATION JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 welcomed a group of high school educators from the New England area to their work spaces Jan. 9.

The group, including both high school teachers and career counselors, was visiting NAS Jacksonville to familiarize themselves with the opportunities available for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the Navy.

The visit provided the opportunity to speak with many different Navy personnel about the career paths available both as an officer and an enlisted sailor to high school students.

The group was sponsored by Mr. Jim Tighe, educational specialist for the New England Navy Recruiting District. Each year, Mr. Tighe brings down groups of educators to expose them to life in the Navy.

"We love doing the trip because it provides a great public relations opportunity for the Navy as well as allow the teachers to be able to talk about the Navy in a positive way," said Mr. Tighe.

During a static display on the aircraft, sensor operators spoke about their specific jobs and how they affect the mission of the P-3C Orion. "I am glad to see people getting out and seeing what the Navy is really about so they can better provide students with information about a career in the Navy," said Naval Aircrewman (Operator) 2nd Class Michelle Workman, a native of Pensacola, Fla.

"I have learned so much! I did not realize the Navy provided so many opportunities to high school students even in this tough job market. I will be able to take what I've learned here and better present the Navy as a great career opportunity," said a high school counselor from New Berlin, New York.

The Florida-based "Fighting Tigers" recently completed a deployment to the 4th and 7th Fleet AORs. Back home in Jacksonville, Fla., VP-8 is conducting an Inter-Deployment Readiness Cycle in preparation of their next deployment.

SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras While on detachment to Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, the "Fighting Tigers" of Patrol Squadron EIGHT (VP-8) took part in a joint cooperative learning program with the Army's 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, Nov. 19 and 20.

Nineteen VP-8 sailors were able to experience an UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter static display and aircraft familiarization flight around the mountainous local area.

"It was a great way to see the beautiful landscape in which we have been living," said Lt. Erin Buttler-Ricketts of VP-8.

In return for the unique experience, the "Fighting Tigers" invited the "Winged Warriors" on board the P-3C Orion for an aircraft tour. The "Winged Warriors" Executive Officer Maj. Christopher McNutt was present for the tour and drew some parallels between the aging UH-60A and P-3C platforms. Applauding the maintenance professionals who take great pride in the preservation of these aging aircraft.

"Great maintenance is how we keep these aircraft flying for 50 years," said McNutt.

Being the only continuously forward deployed rotary-wing aviation asset in the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility, the "Winged Warriors" mission set includes counter drug operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, air movement of people, equipment, and supplies, aero-medical evacuation, and search and rescue.

VP-8 is currently deployed in support of U.S. 4th Fleet. The similarity in mission sets and pride in their people and platform have helped build a strong relationship between the "Winged Warriors" and "Fighting Tigers" teams.

NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan With winter weather right around the corner in northern Japan, the Fighting Tigers of VP-8 are preparing themselves to conduct cold-weather operations.

To the Fighting Tigers, who are used to operating in the warm weather of their homeport ofNAS Jacksonville, Florida, conducting de-icing training is an important necessity to ensure the safety of the aircrew flying the aircraft, and the maintainers who work on the flight-line. VP-8 recently conducted a de-icing drill to train and prepare their maintenance personnel and flight crews for inclement winter weather. Maintenance personnel gained the skills necessary to operate deicing equipment ensuring they are capable of safely and effectively removing any ice buildup and snow on the aircraft's fuselage, wings, and control surfaces.

"Snow and ice can be very dangerous during flight," said VP-8 Safety/NATOPS Officer Lt. Cmdr. Leroy Shoesmith. "Too much ice on the wings will decrease the amount of lift needed for the aircraft to safely fly. In the air we have systems that help us with ice removal, but on the ground these systems are ineffective. During pre-flight snow and ice buildup needs to be removed manually by aircrew and our maintenance team. Special equipment which applies a liquid anti-ice mixture to the aircraft is then used to prevent any additional buildup prior to takeoff," added the Poconos, Pa. native.

The drill consisted of a simulated preflight performed by VP-8 aircrew who called for a maintenance deicing crew. With the GL-1800 Global Deicing truck on scene VP-8 Sailors conducted the necessary training to de-ice and ready an aircraft to go flying in winter conditions.

Aircrew got to experience the amount of time and manpower it takes to properly deice an aircraft. VP-8 aircrews have not routinely operated in cold, icy environment since late 2008.

"There are very few individuals in the squadron that have ever operated in and around snow. Training and preparation ensures we are ready to execute our duties in all conditions without sacrifice to safety or proper procedure," said Shoesmith. "Everyone got a front row view of what should happen. Maintenance personnel who attended the training got the opportunity to participate in operating the equipment, and all aircrew got to see just how the process will work. I know that everyone is significantly more aware of the processes and safety concerns involved in this evolution."

The Fla.-based Fighting Tigers are on a six-month scheduled deployment in support of U.S. 7th Fleet.

NAVAL AIR FACILITY ATSUGI, Japan While on detachment, Combat Aircrew 3 from VP-8 "Fighting Tigers" took part in a bilateral exercise with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) VP-3 "Sea Eagles," Oct. 16-18.

The exercise focused on improving tactical communication and coordination between the squadrons and consisted of a static aircraft display where both squadrons were invited onboard to tour the aircraft followed by a coordinated anti-submarine warfare flight.

"I've been fortunate to have worked with VP-2 'Odin' during an exercise in Misawa and now the 'Sea Eagles' in NAS Atsugi, Japan. Both experiences have been great. The squadrons have tremendous knowledge and skill, and provide valuable training experiences for our aircrew," said Lt. Daniel Kuriluk, VP-8 plane commander, who had worked with the JMSDF before and was again impressed with their skill and professionalism.

The "Sea Eagles" hosted a number of social events during CAC 3's detachment including a soccer match and cookout. The soccer match was held Oct. 17 and due to the large turnout, four teams were formed and a tournament ensued. Teams were divided evenly and consisted of both Japanese and U.S. members. Afterward the "Sea Eagles" presented the winning team with a certificate and sticker from their NAS Atsugi, Japan Soccer Club.

"The soccer matches were a lot of fun," said Naval Aircrewman (Operator) 2nd Class Amanda Sullivan. "The Japanese are such good hosts and a lot of fun to be around."

Following the conclusion of the soccer matches the "Sea Eagles" invited the "Fighting Tigers" to a cookout. Hot dogs and hamburgers were served, while members of both squadrons exchanged patches, hats, and other gifts while having the chance to interact prior to the exercise.

"It was great being able to interact with the 'Sea Eagles' on both a personal and then a professional level," said Naval Aircrewman (Avionics) 2nd Class Daniel D'Orsi. "You could tell friendships had been formed over just a few days which made working together during the exercise a lot more enjoyable."

On the last day of the detachment prior to the final flight both squadrons had one last opportunity to send crewmembers to tour the other squadron's aircraft. Crewmembers enjoyed learning about the similarities and differences between the two aircraft.

"I would like to thank VP-8 for their participation in this exercise," said Lt. Sato, JMSDF plane commander. "It is great to have the opportunity to work together and accomplish a common goal."

Alred volunteered for an overnight community relations project to help with the cleanup of the area affected by the 2011 tsunami that struck the northern Japan region.

MINAMISANRIKUCHO, Japan More than 20 sailors from Naval Air Facility Misawa and VP-8 took an overnight trip to Miyagi Prefecture, Oct. 19-20, 2012, to help the victims of the March 2011 tsunami that struck northeastern Japan.

On a chilly 40-degree morning, sailors gathered and loaded their bus for a six-hour ride down south to Minamisanrikucho. Upon arriving to their destination, they immediately disembarked their bus and headed out to work.

The community relations project consisted of cleaning up a local farm roughly 5,000 square yards in size.

"We are helping them help themselves recover from the devastation the tsunami caused in the area," said Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Roy Cedeo, a native of San Jose, Costa Rica. "I think the local population depends on the farms to subsist, and we are honored to have the opportunity to come out here and help our host nation in whatever way they need us."

After a long day of work, sailors spent the night in a local common house, and woke up early to continue the work they started. By mid afternoon, the job was done and the fields were ready for planting.

"It was a lot of work, but we were happy to make a difference in this hard-hit area," said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Lydale Hyde, originally from Columbus, Ga. "I think it's important that our Japanese brothers and sisters know they can count on us to lend a helping hand whenever it's needed."

NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 participated in the Fleet Air Wing 2 55th Air Memorial Event with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Squadron, VP-2 "Odin" at Hachinohe Air Base, Sept. 23.

This was the first time in the event's history that a U.S. aircraft was involved. VP-8 flew a P-3C Orion to Hachinohe Air Base and joined into loose trail formation with three VP-2 aircraft to conduct a fly-by over the event.

"It was an honor to be able to be a part of an event that celebrates such a rich history of JMDSF aviation," said Lt. William Flynn, a native of Boston, and VP-8's combat aircrew 1 Patrol Plane Pilot. "The JMSDF has a historical foundation built upon exceptionally professional aviators and today's event was a celebration of that fact."

The VP-8 aircrew that executed the fly-by was accompanied for the event by two VP-2 pilots, Lt.j.g. Tatsuya Ochiai and Lt. Cmdr. Tadahisa Shida. "Today's flight was a very memorable experience for me as a P-3C pilot; to see the systems in the flight station of the U.S. P-3C were wonderful. This was the first time for me to ride on another country's P-3C." said Ochiai.

VP-8 and VP-2 have an enduring history of working together. The squadrons have interacted together throughout VP-8's six-month deployment in support of U.S. 7th Fleet.

NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 once again took time out of their busy schedules, volunteering to help the Misawa community by participating in the 2012 Misawa Special Olympics, Sept. 15.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Thirteen Fighting Tigers volunteered to help with different tasks including serving food, organizing activities, escorting Special Olympians, and tearing down equipment.

"It's been a great experience to be able to work and meet such wonderful people," said Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Samatha Taylor. "I've worked with individuals with special needs before and it is always a blast, I'd love to do it again," added Taylor who is originally from Dallas, Texas.

More than 60 athletes from three different schools in the local community participated in the 23rd annual event held on Misawa Air Base.

Sailors from VP-8 teamed up in pairs to escort a Special Olympian through various events, ensuring each athlete had a special day that they will remember for years to come. Events included basketball, tee ball, football throwing, running sprints and face painting. Additionally, participants and volunteers were treated to burgers and hotdogs for lunch, and a Taiko Drum demonstration for entertainment.

"The kids got to run around, throw basketballs, hit baseballs, throw footballs and get their faces painted, it's been a really awesome time," said Aviation Electronics Technician Airman Allison Arroyo, who hails from Fresno, Calif. "Just seeing them walking around with smiles on their faces, you knew today was a chance for them to get to have some fun. I think they really enjoyed themselves today, this has been a really good day and I'm glad I was able to be a part of the event."

NAF Misawa, Japan The "Fighting Tigers" of Patrol Squadron EIGHT (VP-8) hosted 15 Aviation Officer Candidates from the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Fleet Air Wing Two (FAW-2) "Odin" squadron at Naval Air Facility Misawa on Aug. 31, 2012.

The Fighting Tigers provided a static display of a P-3C Orion aircraft, briefed the candidates on the squadron's history and primary missions, and discussed the typical career path for United States Navy Aviators and Naval Flight Officers. The visit concluded with a tour of Tactical Operations Center Misawa and lunch with the candidates.

All personnel involved in the visit noted the benefit of interacting with their counterparts.

"I enjoyed discussing my career path from flight school to today," said VP-8's Lt. Brandon Clark, who led the visit for VP-8. "The candidates were very interested in how we became P-3C pilots and Naval Flight Officers and how U.S. Navy officers end up in other platforms."

Lt.j.g. Patrick Frailey assisted with the static display and found the candidates were most impressed by the plane's Advanced Imaging Multispectral Sensor camera.

VP-8 have interacted with their FAW-2 counterparts on several occasions this deployment, both in-flight and on deck to advance bilateral training and partnerships.

The Fighting Tigers are based out of NAS Jacksonville, Florida, and are currently on a six-month deployment in support of U.S. 7th Fleet.

NAF Misawa, Japan The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 participated in bilateral training with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force squadron, VP-2 "Odin" at Hachinohe Air Base, Aug. 2.

VP-8 flew a P-3C Orion aircraft to Hachinohe Air Base and met with VP-2 to conduct training with an expendable mobile anti-submarine warfare training target and data link-11 training. Ultimately weather prevented EMATT training, but the link-11 training was highly successful.

"The navigator/communicators aboard each aircraft worked to establish secure voice and data communications between the two aircraft," said Lt.j.g. Michael Marschall, a native of Philadelphia and VP-8 combat aircrew 9 navigator/communicator. "Having both operating concurrently greatly improves communication between allies and helps to combat any language barrier."

After completing their training, Japanese and U.S. sailors gathered at a social event hosted by the JMSDF in which Capt. Seto, VP-2 commanding officer, presented a framed photograph to Capt. Gregory Cozad, a native of Las Vegas and deputy commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Force U.S. 7th Fleet, to commemorate the improvements between the JMSDF and U.S. Navy P-3 forces during his tenure.

Capt. Cozad thanked Capt. Seto for his gift and acknowledged the improved communication and teamwork between the two organizations, most notably in humanitarian assistance/disaster relief missions during Operation Tomodachi in 2011.

VP-8 and VP-2 have a strong history of working together. The squadrons trained together when VP-8 was deployed to Japan in 2004/2005 and most recently in a highly successful EMATT Exercise in June 2012.

The NAS Jacksonville, Florida-based "Fighting Tigers" are on a scheduled six-month deployment in support of U.S. 7th Fleet.

The "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 took part in a bilateral exercise with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) June 14 at NAF Misawa, Japan.

VP-8 hosted a visit from the JMSDF's VP-2 "Odin" Squadron, stationed out of Hachinohe Air Base in northern Japan.

Their bilateral exercise focused on tactical communication and coordination, and consisted of four short tactical flights two flown by the "Tigers" and two flown by VP-2 from which crewmen of each squadron were aboard as observers.

"It was such a great opportunity to be able to work with such high quality forces," said Lt. Dan Kuriluk, a VP-8 pilot who participated as an observer on one of the Japanese flights. "I was extremely impressed with the crew's professionalism and skill. I highly encourage anyone who may have this opportunity in the future to participate."

Odin crew members were very pleased with their experience, expressing their desire to fly with American aircrews.

"It was a great event to participate in and a great learning experience for both crews," said Lt. Omura, a veteran Japanese plane commander with more than 3,800 flight hours.

After the exercise, both squadrons were invited to a reception on board NAF Misawa, Japan airbase, hosted by Commander, Task Force 72.4. This provided another opportunity for VP-8 crew members to interact with their bilateral counterparts.

"On behalf of Patrol Squadron 2, I would like to show my deepest appreciation for today's events," said Capy. Seto of JMSDF VP-2. "I also worked with VP-8 in 2002 and it is an honor to work with them again. This is a great chance to promote our relationship and we look forward to more opportunities in the future."

The Fighting Tigers of VP-8 are homebased at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and are currently on a six-month deployment from NAF Misawa, Japan.

VP-8 Flight Surgeon Lt. Jennifer Kruse, accompanied by VP-8 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Chris Flaherty and VP-8 command master chief (CMDCM) Frank King, accepted the 2011 Richard E. Luehrs Operational Flight Surgeon of the Year Award in NAS Pensacola, Florida, Jan. 12.

The Luehrs Award is presented annually to recognize outstanding performance in operational aviation medicine by a first or second tour naval flight surgeon based on leadership qualities, dedication, initiative, resourcefulness, and industry in carrying out their duties with operational forces.

After winning the Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Eleven Flight Surgeon of the Year Award, and earning the nomination of the Naval Air Forces Atlantic fleet, Kruse competed against three other nominees.

However, based on her impressive resume, Kruse beat out the Naval Air Forces Pacific, Naval Reserve, and Marine Corps nominees.

History ThumbnailCameraPhoto by Kaylee LaRocque VP-8 Flight Surgeon Lt. Jennifer Kruse goes over some reports at her desk. Kruse is responsible for ensuring the squadron members are healthy and are ready to fly.

Kruse truly embodies the spirit and qualities reflected in the award throughout her work over the past year as VP-8's flight surgeon.

For the first part of the year, during an arduous Fifth Fleet deployment, Kruse served as primary medical care provider for more than 1,250 combat forces while continuously shuttling between two expeditionary locations.

In addition to her regular duties, Kruse also established a permanent joint forces expeditionary medical clinic designed to serve over 2,500 military personnel.

Upon returning home, she has served thousands of personnel, directly contributing to enhanced medical readiness across the many commands of NAS Jacksonville, Florida, while also finding time to volunteer on weekends with Naval Hospital Jacksonville's Emergency Department.

When asked how she felt about winning the prestigious award, Kruse remarked, "Well when it comes to this kind of stuff, I am a woman of few words, but I can say that I felt truly honored just to be nominated for the award. To actually win it is an amazing feeling and really unexpected."

Although modest in person, Kruse has risen above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrated equally enviable amounts of compassion, professionalism, and expertise in her field.

VP-8 and NAS Jacksonville, Florida will have a giant hole to fill as Kruse moves on with her career to begin her residency this coming June.

Alan Cameron says a prayer prior to spreading the ashes of World War II Veteran Arthur Williams over the Atlantic Ocean as part of his aerial burial at sea.

The second in a line of four generations of naval servicemen, Williams dropped out of high school in order to enlist in the Navy after Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific theatre as a combat aircrewman aboard Martin PBM Mariner patrol-bomber seaplanes.

In addition to hunting enemy submarines, Williams bore witness to many pivotal events of the war. He was aboard one of the first aircraft to fly over Hiroshima and Nagasaki on atomic bomb damage assessment missions.

In addition, from the deck of the seaplane tender USS Hamlin (AV-15), Williams witnessed the historic surrender of Japanese forces to Admiral Nimitz aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay. After the war, Williams utilized the GI Bill to attend the University of California Berkeley.

The VP-8 crew of 11, along with Chaplain Cameron and RP3 Chester Harden, flew the cremains to a spot about 100 miles off of the coast of Jacksonville Beach. Led by Lt. Scott Miller, the crew performed a short ceremony commemorating Williams' life and accomplishments as a Sailor.

"It was so rewarding to be part of this," said Miller. "We are losing many of our World War II veterans, and it is important to honor and pass on their memories to the ensuing generations. It means a lot to have a part in laying an honored veteran to rest."

The crew used GPS to mark the exact spot where Williams' remains were sent to sea, and will present the chart and flag to his surviving family members.

"VP-8 takes great pride in being able to fulfill the last wishes of a veteran for his family. Being part of a ceremony like this is very rewarding and is quite the honor," said Lt. Kristina Romero, VP-8 assistant training officer. "We go about our daily lives in the squadron and sometimes lose sight on what is really important. It is humbling to stop and pay tribute to a great American such as Mr. Williams. He is a true American hero."

The Navy Burial at Sea Program is a means of final disposition of remains that is performed on naval ships, submarines or aircraft. The commanding officer of the squadron or vessel assigned to perform the ceremony will make notification to the family of the date, time, latitude and longitude when the committal service is completed.

HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...VP-8 'Tigers' Drill For Fire Safety By Clark Pierce Editor..." WebSite: JaxNews http://jaxairnews.jacksonville.com/ [06NOV2011]

Just as the squadron's award quarters was dismissed Oct. 26 at the VP-8 spaces in Hangar 1000, aircrewman AWV2 Daniel D'Orsi ran in from the flight line to report a fire on board P-3C Orion number 927. As the duty officer began setting emergency procedures in motion, VP-8 maintainers were already responding to the aircraft.

"As part of the squadron mishap plan, our duty office even made calls to the Naval Safety Center and Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet," explained Lt. Justin Caudle, VP-8 aviation safety officer.

He worked with NAS Jax Training Officer Jim Butters and VP-8 Safety/NATOPS Officer Lt. Cmdr. John Pianetta to create the realistic scenario that exercised both the squadron's mishap plan and the activation of it's CACO (Casualty Assistance Calls Officer) representatives.

"With permission and understanding from his wife, VP-8 Executive Officer Cmdr. Michael Marston volunteered to be a simulated casualty in the scenario and the subject of a CACO visit to his home," said Caudle.

In the military services, notification to the next of kin of an individual who has been reported as a casualty will be accomplished in a timely, professional, dignified and understanding manner. Notification of death or missing cases is always accomplished in-person by a uniformed service representative.

"Squadron leadership was extremely impressed with the thoroughness and overall knowledge of the process displayed by CACO Officer Lt. Kristina Romero and her team," said Caudle.

Marston was pleased with the overall exercise. "This drill provided VP-8 with a great opportunity to conduct realistic joint training in cooperation with base emergency responders. Despite a problem with the simulated smoke generator, squadron personnel reacted quickly and professionally when notified of the simulated fire emergency. Maintenance personnel sprang into action until base emergency services arrived on the scene," said Marston.

"This met the goal of determining what types of response squadron personnel would react with. Valuable feedback was also provided by base crash crew concerning interactions with squadron personnel on the flight line."

Marston added, "Our squadron duty office executed the mishap plan with minimal errors and zero omissions. All notifications were made in a timely manner and meaningful training was accomplished because personnel were allowed to actually make the phone calls and provide required reports. We appreciate the assistance from emergency responders and base personnel who made this drill possible."

NAS Jax Occupational Safety and Health Specialist Gregg Gillette was an observer of the aircraft fire drill.

"I'm keeping an eye out for any real-life safety issues that may occur in the midst of carrying out this drill. We don't want any heroics when the 'injured crew members' are mannequins. Our goal is to train without the cost of a real-life injury and that's exactly what happened today."

Caudle concluded, "The best way to build a safety culture is to exercise our plan and expose squadron personnel to safe, proven procedures should an accident occur. Like every Navy squadron, our goal is zero ground- or flight-related mishaps."

"By activating our response system today, we'll get a clearer picture of how our squadron and base first-responders will deal with emergency situations in the future," said Caudle.

In September, VP-8 celebrated 33 years and 196,000 hours of mishap-free flying.

MANAMA, NSA Bahrain, Oman - The hard work and dedication of the "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8, was recently acknowledged when the command was notified that they had earned the 2010 AVCM Donald M. Neal Aircraft Maintenance Award, known as the "Golden Wrench" for patrol squadron (VP) East, March 26.

The maritime patrol squadron continued its standard of maintenance excellence and mission accomplishment in 2010, skillfully executing a dynamic operational inter-deployment readiness cycle and combat deployment to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) in support of Operations New Dawn and Enduring Freedom. VP-8 deftly balanced resources and requirements to achieve a 87.8% mission completion rate and 58.0% aircraft mission capable rate while completing more than 600 sorties and 3,000 flight hours in the P-3 Orion aircraft.

The squadron's maintenance department generated a 100% mission completion rate during Operation Unified Response in support of humanitarian assistance operations in Haiti, completing 15 sorties with a total of 148 flight hours. They also achieved every objective while forward detached for exercises Noble Manta in Sicily, UNITAS in Argentina, HALCYON in Canada, and RIMPAC in Hawaii.

The Tigers outstanding commitment to by-the-book maintenance led all contenders for the award with 40 of 41 graded aircraft maintenance inspection programs "on-track".

"VP-8 maintenance department set the standard for productivity, efficiency, and safety across the group," said Rear Adm. Michael W. Hewitt, commander, patrol reconnaissance group, via naval message.

The "Golden Wrench" award was established in 1965 by the Chief of Naval Operations and sponsored by Lockheed Martin to acknowledge maintenance performance that goes above and beyond the extraordinary effort that aircraft maintenance requires. The Golden Wrench is presented annually to a VP squadron in the categories of Atlantic, Pacific and Special Projects.

"Every Tiger showed unrelenting commitment to the organization and our mission," said Lt. Cmdr. Arnold Roper, VP-8 maintenance officer. "They want to make our command successful."

The maintenance department of VP-8 worked around the clock to have more than 10 aircraft ready to fly training missions during work ups on the last home cycle, before deploying to the 5th Fleet AOR.

"One of the biggest challenges we had during the home cycle was the high turnover due to the squadron's homeport change from Maine to Jacksonville," said Master Chief Aircraft Maintenanceman Daniel Fernandez, VP-8's maintenance master chief.

With the combined effort of maintainers and aircrew the "Fighting Tigers" flew more than 4,450 flight hours during its 957 flights.

"It is very exciting news to know VP-8 won the 2010 "Golden Wrench" Award for aircraft maintenance excellence," said Cmdr. Jiancarlo Villa, VP-8's commanding officer.

Our entire maintenance team has earned this prestigious award through tremendous hard work."

Villa also said, "The role of maintenance personnel was very important, they were continuously self-motivated. We are not an organization that waits to see if things are going to be ok, that is not the Tiger way. We are extremely good at self-evaluating ourselves, honestly and brutally. This allows us to fix things before they become a problem." They continued on to acknowledge that leaders like Master Chief Holden, previous maintenance master chief, Lt. Cmdr. Brinson, previous operations officer, Chief Benson, maintenance control chief, and Lt. Seymour, quality assurance officer ensured a rigorous process of self-evaluation was in place and being executed. Our program managers responded well and delivered," said Villa.

VP-8 is on a scheduled deployment to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility in support of operations New Dawn and Enduring Freedom.
