I worked with Dennis at Lockheed Martin in Denver CO. We found out, that while I was in the Navy, stationed at NAS North Island, San Diego, California, VP-31, from June 1969 to Jan. 1972, he went through the P2V training there. We were transfered to San Ysidro, San Diego, California, then NAS Miramar, California. We had two Boeing PB-1 Flying Fortress (PB1W)'s. The old B-17 with the radome on the under side and eguipped with APS24 radar gear. We were transfered to Guam, Siapan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and finally Tsingtoa China. I was discharged as in 1948 as an AMM2C, went through college on the gi bill and ended up as 1ST. LT in the Air Force Reserve. I never went on active duty in the Air Force. MY MOS was Aircraft Mmaintainence Oofficer. I spent 6 years in the Navy, went through AMM School at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and then advance AMM School at NAS Memphis, Tennessee. I was assigned to Ships Service at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island when I was assigned to the newly formed VP-1. We were commanded by Big Red McDonald and I was his Flight Crew Chief..." [01DEC2008]

Back to Cuba on the USS Saratoga in December 1962. Summer Med cruise on the USS Saratoga in 1963. Carrier qualifications on the USS Forrestal in Nov 1963 where I witnessed the only time in history that a C-130 operated off an aircraft carrier. I question the picture about Samar (SEE: VPB-119 Mishap 12 JAN 46). We went there only if a TYPHOON WAS HEADING FOR Manila. We were redesignated as VPHL-9 and we flew our planes to NAS Agana, Guam and turned them over to VPHL-2. The squadron then went back to the States to Miramar, California and we were the first squadron to get P2V2's. I was a crew member in 39326 and the sqyadron was designated VPML-7. After receiving all our aircraft from Lockheed, we relocated to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. It was then redesignated VP-7. We left NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in February of 1944, stopped at Annette Island the first night, then on to NAS Kodiak, Alaska and then to NAS Adak, Alaska where we spent several days training on Loran. Then to our final destination--Attu. In September our crew was selected to escorgt 3 OS2Us as far as Annette on their return to stateside. What a trip! We received orders to return to Dutch Harbor instead of NAS Attu, Alaska, the squadron had been divided into units. In December we recveived unexpected orders to return to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. We had orders for leave waiting for us, and most of us made it home for Christmas. Our crew consisted of three (3) officers and 9 enlisted men. At the time I was S1c(AMM) and was the Flight Engineer of the Crew. Our Patrol Plane Commander was a G. D. Mulford who was a LT at the start of July but was promoted to LCDR about August 17, 1945. LCDR Mulford's home town was Woodbury, NJ. I was 19 years old during the summer of 1945. It is my thinking that CDR Mulford was 5 to 10 years older. He had already flown in a squadron in the South Pacific. Since the war ended in August of 1945, our squadron was disestablished and we were dispersed to various places. I am now 77 years old, and I am trying to locate some of my old crew to exchange memories. Probably some of them are no longer living. I can come up with the last names of several other members of the crew, but not all, and the location of none. Names that I can remember are: The other two pilots were, I think, a SANDERS and a SHEFFIELD one was an Ensign, the other a LT(jg) Joseph Modica, AMM Plane Captain, ? I hitched a ride with one of the VP-47 P-3's from NAS Agana, Guam to NAS Moffett Field, California on April 15, 1973. We stopped in NAS Midway Island and spent the night and arrived in the afternoon. The wreckage area was still visible from the plane as landed and while I didn't know any of the VP-47 crew that were killed (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends April 12, 1973), it was a very sad moment. The fact that I was an air traffic controller I could have understood if the crew had treated me indifferently, but that was not the case. They made sure I had a great trip home and let me lend a hand in the sonar bouy deployment. I had a great flight and wanted to say that every VP crew I knew where nothing but professional and the very best at flying low, over the ocean in the dark of night..." [19APR2006]

FOWLER, CAPTAIN Charles W. III http://www.nrl.navy.mil/content.php?P=IG "...CAPT Fowler reported to NRL in September 2002, from the Pentagon, where he served as a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan and was commissioned an Ensign through the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate program at Pensacola, Florida, in June 1980. He began flight training that same month and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in May 1981. In November 1981, after completion of the P-3C Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) syllabus at VP-30, CAPT Fowler reported to VP-26 at NAS Brunswick, Maine, and subsequently completed deployments to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, and NAS Bermuda. During this tour, he was designated a Patrol Plane Tactical Coordinator, Instructor TACCO, and Mission Commander. In February 1985, CAPT Fowler was ordered to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), Joint Planning Staff for Space (JPS) and Office of the Director, Joint Staff as a JCS Intern and Action Officer. After completing the internship, he was assigned in March 1986 to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Staff in the Strategy, Plans, and Policy Division (OP-60), as the Air Warfare and Space Warfare Capabilities and Objectives Officer. In 1987, he reported to Commander, Carrier Group Three, homeported at NAS Alameda, California, as Aide and Flag Lieutenant. During this tour, he deployed with Battle Group CHARLIE to the North Arabian Sea aboard US Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in support of Operation EARNEST WILL. CAPT Fowler received orders in July 1989 to serve as a P-3C Instructor TACCO/Mission Commander at VP-30, the east coast FRS, at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. In 1991, he returned to sea duty as a Department Head and joined the "Batmen" of VP-24 on a tri-site deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NAS Bermuda, and the NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. In May 1993, CAPT Fowler was selected to serve as the Deputy Executive Assistant for the Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO). After completing a 27-month tour in VCNO's ofice, he attended the Johns Hopkins University School for Advanced International Studies as a selectee for the FY96 Pol/Mil Masters Program. In May 1996, he received a master's degree in International Public Policy. CAPT Fowler next reported as Executive Officer of the "Fighting Marlins" of VP-40 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, and subsequently assumed command of the squadron in December 1997. During his tenure, VP-40 earned a Meritorious Unit Citation, COMNAVAIRPAC Batte "E," CNO Safety "S," the Golden Wrench, two consecutive Arnold J. Isbell Trophys for ASW Excellence from CNO, and deployed twice to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. While in the SEVENTHFLT area of responsibility, he served as Commander, Task Group 72.4. In August 1999, CAPT Fowler reported as a student to the National War College and graduated in June 2000 with a master's degree in National Security Studies. He subsequently was selected to serve as Special Assistant and Chief Speechwriter for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. From there it was back to VP-94 to transition them to P3's. Terminated flying in VP-94 tour, but stayed with the VP community with tours to VP-92 in SOWEY then on to NASGLEn and VP-90. CNAVRES "Enhanced" my career in 1985 with a trip to VF-301 Tomcats, and I managed a years tour with COMFITAEWWINGSPAC at Mirimar as code 755 F14 Material Readiness SCPO. My tour ended when VP-7 moved out to NAS Sigonella, Sicily in April of 1962. Those were great years with a great bunch of guys.
